Zombie Army 4: Dead War - Cooperative shooter preview

If we look around we can easily guess that there are plenty of zombie-themed games. For a software house to establish itself with this type of product, in an already saturated slice of the market, it can represent a real challenge. However, when you are sure of your quality, the situation changes, and it is the case with Zombie Army 4: Dead War. We had the opportunity to test it in a dedicated event, and it must be said that these first impressions of ours are positive bikes. Rebellion, which is the development house that is working on the game, is generally known for the series of Sniper Elite. Now finally the team has made the brand take an important step forward, renewing its style and inserting new elements that do nothing but further expand the experience, previously reduced to a sort of DLC of the old Sniper Elite. Ready to destroy an untold number of undead?

Not the common Zombies

As already mentioned, everything was born as a DLC for Sniper Elite, an additional content that, however, was able to be a great success. This is why Ribellion has decided to make it a stand alone brand series, now very popular among fans of the genre. Being a title that does not aim to tell any kind of story, below we will talk about what is the vital fulcrum of the experience, that is the gameplay ... However, a faint light of narration is present, although it is not particularly sought after: Hitler has been resurrected and is ready to plunge the world into a new era of chaos.

The game system has almost the obligation to minimize the repeatability of the actions, so as to always make everything varied and fun. After our test we feel like saying that the mission has apparently been passed, even if it is based only on a horde system. The main enemies will be super aggressive zombies, and to stop them we will be able to force on a large arsenal made of very special firearms, traps and grenades. The developer has thought a lot about the diversification of the enemies, so as to make the action less repetitive than usual during the games. The zombies to be slaughtered are really of all kinds, from the most common and metabolized by users, to the most complex and "organized" ones. The game will therefore bring many changes, which will obviously have a positive effect on the flow of the experience.

In any case, those who have now assimilated some aspects of the series will not find major problems in settling in between menus and missions, since their general formula has remained practically unchanged. However, if the title also lends itself to a single experience, his true soul is only highlighted by playing in co-op. From the structure of the maps to that of the PCs, everything has been designed specifically to make players collaborate in extreme situations. The development house, therefore, has decided to take care of this aspect in an almost maniacal way, inserting different points within the environments where it is possible to plan strategies and group actions. Very important now: between missions, users will be allowed to enter a room to refresh themselves, reload ammunition and effectively prepare for the next fight. To give users an important sense of Customization, Rebellion has decided to pay close attention in this respect. As mentioned above, between missions you will find a workbench, from where you can modify your weapons as you wish. No gun has been designed for a single purpose, you can then shape it according to your needs.

Matter of style

The most compelling thing about Zombie Army 4 however is the gloomy and gloomy atmosphere that hovers during the experience. Even though you will be well armed, you will feel really in danger and lacking in something. Finding a moment of peace during the missions will be impossible, which automatically leads to choosing a winning strategy with a few seconds available. Weapon feedback is really great, but don't think you can waste bullets in the slightest. Every single shot has a specific weight: if you don't give the right importance to this aspect, you will find yourself in really complex situations. As if that were not enough, you will also have to pay close attention to the friendly fire, a big problem since we are inside a game that makes frenzy its strong point. Imagine yourself in the midst of chaos, and having to distinguish your mate from a sea of undead that surrounds you ... being able to be lucid in these situations becomes crucial for ultimate success. As for the technical aspect, Zombie Army 4 is a great title, with no particular frame rate drops or bugs that undermine the experience. However, although graphically it is not particularly excellent, the overall quality is well made and does not turn up your nose.

In conclusion we can say that Zombie Army 4: Dead War is an excellent product, able to convince both the most experienced players and the various newbies, with the British team that has undoubtedly taken a step forward by proposing an interesting title starting from basics already solid. There have been no too invasive changes, but there are small improvements that when added together make a huge difference, compared to both the previous chapter and other competitors. Although it is still early to give a definitive judgment on the work, we were particularly impressed and we are quite sure that the video game hides within itself a great potential. Instead, we are concerned to see how everything will be if used over a longer period of time, but in order to analyze a similar issue we will inevitably have to wait. For now, we are particularly satisfied and can't wait to try it out in the review phase.
