What will Life is Strange 2 look like?

Over the last few years, the videogame landscape has broadened its horizons thanks to the great work of the many indie development studios, who strongly believed in their titles, and to the many triple A publishers who have pushed these products into the international market. Let's think of titles like Unravel, developed by the guys at Coldwood Interactive who, with a publisher behind their backs like Electronic Arts, were able to make their niche title known to the whole world. But in this editorial we will not talk about Unravel, for which perhaps there will be time later, but we will focus on the interesting history of a product such as Life is Strange and what we expect in the next chapter of the series, out with the first episode on September 27, 2018. In some points of this article there may be spoilers on the first chapter of Life is Strange, on Captain Spirit and on the story of Life is Strange 2, so if you don't want to spoil yourself, we advise you to close the article.

The origin

We are in the distant August of 2014 when DONTNOT, a Parisian developer famous only for developing a title like Remember Me, officially announced that it was developing Life is Strange, but giving little information on the title. After the announcement, gamers had some doubts about the product, as they hoped that the development company would not make the same mistakes it did with Remember Me; over the months DONTNOT signed the collaboration with Square Enix, publisher of the title, who had some suspicions about choosing a main female character but, fortunately, the publisher accepted Max and did not veto the many themes of Life is Strange (euthanasia, cyber bullying, domestic violence, etc.). Finally we arrive in December 2014, the month in which Life is Strange showed itself in a magnificent announcement trailer and on January 30, 2015 the first episode was released. The title was a great success among both critics (it won the BAFTA Games Awards as "Best Story" and the "Best Impact Game of The Game Awards"), and among the public (in May 2017 it sold over 3 million copies). As you well know, the product was "smeared" throughout 2015, as DONTNOT wanted to have plenty of time to work on the title.

A deserved success?

Life is Strange was a hit for the DONTNOT kids, but why? How did an indie development house create such a revolutionary product? The title is a pure concentrate of emotions and twists combined with a fitting soundtrack; presents many well-characterized characters, each with its own story, and addresses many issues. All not without a big job by the software house: for example, the development team visited the Pacific North-West regions and tried to make the setting as realistic as possible! Two years after the launch of the first episode, DONTNOT announced the aforementioned Life is Strange 2; during E3 2017, Square Enix announced the prequel called Life is Strange: Before The Storm (developed by Deck Nine Games). Finally, as you well know, on June 25 DONTNOT published for free Captain Spirit, which we will surely review in LIS 2.

What awaits us in Life is Strange 2?

As we have known for a year now, Life is Strange 2 it will not resume the events of Max and Chloe, but there will be a new story, a new setting and many new features. Two weeks ago, Square Enix released the announcement trailer for the first episode featuring a backpack. What can it mean? One of the assumptions that can be made is that the title will present a long journey, but we cannot yet know for which destination. Another clue that strengthens the hypothesis of "travel" is the code name found by a user on Reddit: Life is Strange Promenade. Probably the subtitle can give us a new clue: Promenade would indicate nouns "seafront" o "walk", all of this ties into the announcement trailer!

In the last few days a Reddit user, after making the data mining on Captain Spirit, he discovered a lot of new information: Max will be replaced by a new character called Sean, alongside him will be his brother Daniel. According to some rumors, the two characters would be the boys who are seen in the Captain Spirit cutscene, but there would also be a dog, a certain Cassidy and also Max, Chloe and Warren. But now a question arises: why did this user also find the names of characters from the first Life is Strange? This is in contrast to what was said by DONTNOD and Square Enix itself but it could be connected to the fact that, in the new chapter of the series, the choices made with Max and Chloe will have repercussions. We just have to wait anxiously until September 27 of this year, to know if all these hypotheses will prove to be true and DONTONOD will hit the mark again.
