What are the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone X?

The new iPhone XS replaces the latest iPhone X. At Keynote, Apple unveiled the new model a little more powerful than the iPhone X. What are the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone X? Is the price difference justified? Our comparison below.

Apple iPhone Xs e iPhone Xs Max: i nuovi iPhone svelati

In the introduction to the conference, Tim Cook explained that the iPhone X was the best-selling smartphone in the world. Some sources claim they have sold over 60 million devices in less than a year. And despite this, the brand has decided to replace it with the new iPhone XS, and the larger version which is the iPhone XS Max.

What are the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone X?

A very similar design

The iPhone X belongs to 2017, the iPhone XS generation to 2018. Tim Cook willingly admits, that the new smartphone is very similar to the iPhone X at times. There is a display on both smartphones that covers almost the entire surface - except for the notch at the top in the center of the device.

The screen size remains the same: 5,8 inches diagonally with the same resolution (2,436 x 1,125 pixels). To continue the comparison between the iPhone XS and the iPhone X, there is no difference in the size of the phone (143,6mm x 70,9mm x 7,7mm). On the other hand, the weight varies slightly: 174 grams for the iPhone X, against 177 grams for the iPhone XS.

For both iPhone XS and iPhone X, they both have a metal frame around them and a glass back (Tim Cook said the glass in the new iPhone XS is even more durable). In the foreground, the same technology: a super-retina OLED screen that offers exceptional image quality. Apple explains that the screen is next-generation and can handle HDR video.

On the back, a dual-sensor camera that doesn't actually change from the previous version (see next section). In terms of color, the iPhone X was available in silver and space gray. Small difference with the iPhone XS available in silver, space gray and gold.

There are some small differences that we cannot notice with the naked eye: the new iPhone XS is IP68 certified (water and dust resistant), which is a difference with the iPhone X. This last one was limited to IP67 certification. Apple confirms that tests have been conducted on different types of liquids such as wine, beer or salt water and the iPhone XS has always held up. (So it can never be friends with drinking) The difference between IP67 and IP68, the former only has 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter, while the IP68 version withstands up to 2 meters. (Of beer???)

On Chinese versions of the iPhone XS, there will be space for a dual SIM. For the rest of the world, it will be necessary to rely on an eSIM to add to the existing traditional SIM. This will allow you to have two phone numbers on the same device. On the other hand, it's still not a (big) difference between iPhone XS and iPhone X that we can notice.

Note that Apple Pay is available on both smartphones.

Apple introduces a new chip: A12 Bionic

In the official presentation of the iPhone XS, Apple presented the new chip incorporated in the new model. The A12 Bionic SoC differs from the A11 (present in the iPhone X) in terms of performance and consumption.

A12 Bionic processor

As can be seen in the diagram above, the chip includes a processor (2 high performance cores) which is up to 15% more powerful than the previous one. The graphics chip is 50% more powerful, which improves the experience of gaming enthusiasts.

With this chip, Apple improves the “Neural Engine” chip (8 vs 2 previously) which adds further intelligence to the phone. The brand is delighted to have a real-time machine learning system that learns user activity.

Comparison of iPhone XS and iPhone X camera

In the images, the cameras on the back of the iPhone XS and iPhone X are similar: we find a wide angle and a telephoto sensor, both of 12 MPx (respectively f / 1,8 and f / 2 4).

Apple says the sensors are still more efficient on the new model (with better optical stabilization and better light consideration), but more importantly the new A12 Bionic chip allows for better photo processing. According to Apple, the chip can perform up to 1 trillion operations on a photo.

Note that the new iPhone XS can record HDR video at 30 frames per second, which wasn't possible with the iPhone X. As with the sound, it's stereo. In short, two small differences that distinguish the two products in our comparison.

As for the camera on the front of the phone, it doesn't change from model to model: always 7 MPx, ƒ / 2,2, always the same effects, and always the same 1080p HD video recording.

Autonomy of iPhone XS and iPhone X

Apple only gives approximations: the iPhone XS lasts 30 minutes longer than an iPhone X using it in the same way (as for the iPhone XS Max, with a larger screen, it lasts 1:30 longer than the iPhone X) .

Apple never provides the functionality of the built-in battery in their iPhones, but anticipates the runtimes measured by the brand. The iPhone Xs has an average autonomy of 30 minutes longer than the iPhone X. In detail, the brand announces that the talk time is one hour longer than the iPhone X.

Price: iPhone XS versus iPhone X

It should be known that the iPhone X was available in 64GB and 256GB versions. The new iPhone XS adds additional storage as it comes in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB. In terms of prices, the iPhone XS 64 GB starts at 1159 euros and the version with 512 GB goes up to 1449 euros. With the size of photos taken by the iPhone XS, the 512GB model can hold around 200.000 photos.

What are the differences between iPhone XS and iPhone X? Conclusion!

iPhone X vs iPhone XS, who wins the game? In terms of differences, it is mainly the arrival of the new A12 Bionic chip that brings more power and better overall performance to the iPhone XS: Face ID is a little faster, applications are 30% faster at the same time, l opening and the photos have improved.

On the applications, Apple proved that UX and speed have been improved and that augmented reality has been perfectly adapted to the iPhone XS. Now it remains to be seen (and tested) if there is a real difference between the two models.

In the end, the differences don't seem so obvious. The reality is however that the iPhone X is no longer on sale, so users will forcibly migrate to the new iPhone XS at least those who intend to switch phones. Fortunately, the price is similar.
