Welcome back for a short visit to the magical world of Alma!

Version tested: PC

A few months after the publication of the base game, the first downloadable content for FEAR 2: Project Origin (of which we invite you to read our review for more information), with Reborn subtile, which at a price of about eight euros ( the price is similar for all versions) attempts to revive the interest in the sequel to one of the most acclaimed first person shooters

and discussed the past few years. The plot is quite simple: in the role of a replicant you have to follow the orders of an authoritarian and mysterious voice that will guide the nameless protagonist to the center of the crater of an explosion. Who will ever be waiting for us? The Big Brother auditions? As end users of the game it is up to us to find out! In reality it does not take long, in the sense that with an hour and a half, two hours at the most, you can safely reach the end of the five chapters that make up Reborn, also because of particularly difficult situations you do not meet and the maps they are terribly linear, complete with weapons and energy supply checkpoints found almost after every fight and not at all disguised with some narrative or environmental trick. You got it right, going around the few maps you will find abandoned weapons as if they were cigarette butts. In reality, the general impression given by this FEAR 2 pill is that of being more a sort of collage of paid maps, not too well-finished, than a real expansion. It almost seems like a summary that tries to compress all the playful contents of the base title into a very small space: you start aboard the combat robot, go on for about twenty minutes (the best part of the package), then proceed on foot until the end by fighting against old enemies and collecting old weapons.

No Alma, no party

Obviously there is also Alma, the caterpillar child, but frankly she makes a very poor figure by limiting herself to some occasional apparition, as if her presence was an inevitable necessity to remind the user what product she is playing. So don't expect any revelations about her life or getting her phone number to invite her to dinner. In reality, apart from a very predictable final twist, there is little to get excited about on a narrative level. The only gimmick worthy of mention are the objectives to be achieved derived directly from the slave status of the protagonist and of which we do not tell you more so as not to ruin the only micro surprise of Reborn.

On the other hand, all those who had criticized the artificial intelligence of the enemies of FEAR 2 will be delighted because they will be able to continue posting their arrows on the forums, since there is no trace of progress: the enemy soldiers continue to attack in a predictable way and running to meet our bullets, the invisible soldiers continue not to be able to attack by surprise, the snipers continue to have the reaction times of a fossil buried under fifty meters of earth and so on. Nothing new under the sun, just as there is nothing new from a technical point of view, which is rather predictable and certainly not negative since some environments are very beautiful in construction, even if made up of completely recycled elements. The only noteworthy moment is the final battle which, although not too spectacular, manages to put in difficulty if you don't face it with loads of medkits and ammunition. Too bad that alone is not enough to raise the offer, overall little more than mediocre.

FEAR 2: Reborn is short. Too short. It is understandable that a downloadable content for the price of a few euros does not last an eternity, but at least three hours of play could arrive, since there is not even time to enjoy all the weapons. Moreover, there is a total lack of novelties, which are hiding both from a technical point of view and from that of mechanics. This is a product suitable only for die-hard FEAR 2 fans, others can also avoid it.
