While we players eagerly await the arrival of cyberpunk 2077, the action RPG made by CD Project RED, the Polish software house is already working on its next title. The news, now given for certain, foresees the development of The Witcher 4, a new videogame set within the universe of the same name. The story will definitely not be tied to Geralt of Rivia, whose narrative development ended with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but may instead focus on Characteristic. The young "Zireael“, Capable of traveling through time and space, could indeed be the protagonist of a prequel story, at least compared to the events narrated in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The credibility of this theory, which has been online for some time, is certainly validated by the fact that Ciri is the fulcrum of the story in Wiedźmin. Let's talk about the literary saga written by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, from which both the videogame trilogy and the recent TV series produced by Netflix with Henry Cavill in the title role are taken. Jakub Szamałek, Story Designer of CD Project RED, wanted to give a further clue regarding this hypothesis, stating that:
I was sorry not to have had the opportunity to be able to explore Ciri's past more. She is such a wonderfully rich and complex character.
Due to obvious reasons - let's say Ciri is almost absent for two thirds of the game - it didn't have the space we writers would have liked it to have. But who knows, maybe that's something we'll explore in the future.
Of course, Szamałek does not give any official confirmation, but his words show the passion with which the development team would devote itself to a story focused on the bearer of the Old Blood. For now we just have to be patient, perhaps replaying The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which continues to achieve record numbers, or wait until September 17 for the release of Cyberpunk 2077 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia. Who knows if, within the new CD Projekt RED title, we might find some distant clue connected to The Witcher 4.
