The Doctor Sleep director defends Marvel films from Scorsese's criticism

During a recent interview with CinePop, he was asked Mike Flanagan, director of Doctor Sleep, what were his thoughts on the criticisms raised by Martin Scorsese on the films of The Marvel movies. The legendary director known for Goodfellas and Taxi Driver, has focused attention on himself after comparing the films of the MCU to "funfairs", arguing that it is not a "cinema". When asked about Marvel movies and Scorsese's comments, Flanagan readily defended superhero movies. Here is the response from the director of Doctor Sleep:

I cried during Endgame. Martin Scorsese said, 'Movies are dreams', you know? I don't think you can watch a Marvel movie, superhero movies, good versus evil and those epic stories, and I don't think you can tell if one dream is better or more authentic than another.

I think cinema encapsulates so many different visions, so many different kinds of stories, that it's just about giving people a shared experience and characters that can move. Marvel movies absolutely do it for me, so no I disagree with Scorsese's words.

Immediately after, Flanagan talked about his film, which will debut in theaters next 31 October.

It is an adaptation of the Doctor Sleep novel, Stephen King's sequel to his novel The Shining. But this also exists in the same cinematic universe that Kubrick established in his adaptation The Shining. Reconciling those three sources, sometimes very different, was for us the most stimulating and exciting part from a creative point of view.
