Solar Opposites - Review of the first Star Original animated series

After the enormous success that the animated series have enjoyed in our country - see Bojack Horseman and Rick and Morty - Disney, with the official release of Star, certainly could not miss such an opportunity. Star is the new session of Disney + dedicated to the older ones, which will be available starting from February 23 2021. Inside you will find titles far removed from the iconic contents of the Mickey Mouse House. Among various well-known names - such as Scrubs, Modern Family and Boris - There will already be plenty of original titles at launch Star, and today we are just here to talk to you about one of these. On everyone's lips, from the moment of the announcement, we find Solar Opposites, an animated series that perfectly follows the wave of the aforementioned Rick and Morty. Created four hands by Mike McMahan e Justin Roiland - co-creator and voice actor of many characters in (guess what) Rick and Morty - first released in the US on May 8, 2020 on the digital platform Hulu.

An ever-present humor

Although initially the series may be an attempt to "replicate", going forward with the episodes will acquire a real identity of its own. On this occasion, our heroes will not be traveling through increasingly unlikely worlds and universes, but rather it will be alien oddities to arrive on Earth. Due to an explosion caused by an asteroid, the planet Shlorp It was destroyed. Before escaping, each group of aliens was assigned a "pupa," a deadly machine to evolve and use to recreate a new version of Shlorp in place of their new host orb. Unfortunately for our protagonists, instead of landing on an uninhabited planet, they will be catapulted onto the already overpopulated Earth, the most unpleasant planet to live on for their species. If the adult Korvo and its replicant Yumyulack they will look forward to being able to leave Earth, his companion in adventures Terry and its replicant Jesse they will love their new planet and look forward to integrating seamlessly with the rest of the inhabitants. The whole series will tell the adventures of this bizarre "family", struggling with Korvo's attempts to restart their spaceship, and those of Terry and Jesse to be accepted by their peers.

Eight episodes of about 20 minutes for this first season of Solar Opposites. A riot of subtle and sagacious humor - at times apparently "bad" - combined with themes of social criticism such as the school system or pollution, but also parodying many of the most common and absurd aspects that distinguish our "race". If we wanted to look at the series with a watchful eye on the social situation we are experiencing right now in the world, we could find references to the delicate themes of racism and equality. It is not difficult to notice how often the discomfort felt by the various characters is highlighted in trying to fit in without being accepted, and how each of them reacts differently, based on their character and age. From the grumpy adult who just wants to go home, to the little girl who would like to be everyone's friend, Solar Opposites he puts in front of us some very important and delicate themes, but treating them with a penetrating humor that makes everything fun, smooth and not heavy at all.

Did we really need it?

Although it is not an Adult Swim title - the Cartoon Network affiliate active at night - certainly, as we said earlier, we find in Solar Opposites many similarities compared to other animated series. This is why one wonders if there was really the need to create yet another series set in a world where various universes are mixed and try to coexist. Lovers of the genre will certainly consider it a gem, perfect to watch while waiting for the new seasons of their favorite TV series, but with such vast catalogs nowadays probably a title like this could get lost among thousands of other titles. Perhaps due to the scarcity of episodes (to date only 8) or to the lack of originality regarding the characterization of the secondary characters (which are too subdued and forgettable compared to the protagonists) at the moment we cannot consider it a major series.

The fact remains that the series is watched and is also very pleasant and perfect for spending these evenings "necessarily" at home alone or in company. With the expansion of the Disney + catalog and in particular of the catalog Star, we hope that it will not be put on the back burner, indeed we are sure that a second season could pay off Solar Opposite worthy of being compared to other opponents.
