Earlier last month, a major Inside Xbox gave players several exciting new announcements. Among these was also the new action RPG from Bandai Namco entitled Scarlet nexus, a game about which we still have little information but which certainly represents a further piece of a style and a genre that is becoming increasingly popular within the videogame medium. Let's talk about the union between Japanese animation and that type of products aimed ataction, whether it is pure or contaminated by other genres. A combination that apparently works and that over the years has led various Japanese developers to try their hand at similar productions. So let's see some examples, both past and future, which well represent the way in which the two worlds have influenced each other.

Special effects and adrenaline

As many shonen teach, anime-style video games can often count on one great variety of approaches to action, all offered by a wide freedom linked to the offensive possibilities of the characters. Most of the time it is in fact "crazy" action, frenetic and that bring out extravagant skills and techniques in full Japanese style. This is the case, for example, of the most recent unreleased title of PlatinumGames. Astral Chain in fact, it combines the trait of Masakazu Katsura, as well as an atmosphere and a narration influenced by anime, with the extreme adrenaline inherent in its combat system. In this case, particular and oriental mechanics such as the use of Legions in battle allow the fights not only to reach a great speed and variety, but also to amaze thanks to the originality of their dynamics.

Another product of this type is God Eater, which manages to show even more, in a context characterized by ferocious enemies and frenetic clashes, a classic and modern anime style, as does Scarlet Nexus himself. They could then also be mentioned Dusk Diver, although it is also a title influenced by the beat 'em up genre, and Crystar, FuRyu action RPG. Bandai Namco has shown, however, how the stylistic language of an anime can also be well adapted to a slower and more reasoned action, as in the case of Code Vein. Inspired more by souls-like, the latter sacrifices the speed of the aforementioned titles to embrace a more thoughtful approach. However, those benefits, or at least those differences, that a more cartoon graphic system and special effects can give to the type of gameplay remain. We could then talk about other ways of understanding action games, for example by considering i musou, a particular genre that has seen Japanese products such as the various One Piece: Pirate Warriors or Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers. Although it is a world still far from Scarlet Nexus and the others, it certainly represents one of the sides of the video game that most manages to associate Japanese animation with pure action.

Future: not just Scarlet Nexus

While Scarlet Nexus probably has more exposure right now, it's not the only title of its kind to hit the market in the next few years. There are in fact some interesting projects to keep an eye on, both from Bandai Namco itself and from other developers. One of these is definitely Granblue Fantasy: Relink, quite promising title and which has already shown a varied combat system full of special effects. The title, initially made by PlatinumGames, then passed entirely into the hands of Cygames, which still seems willing to maintain that excess of action typical of the works of Hideki Kamiya's company, obviously integrating it with the atmosphere of the famous series born on mobile devices.

Another game with a similar type of combat could be Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris, a game coming out in July that, while it has strong RPG mechanics, includes all that action-packed frenzy. Yet very little is known, if at all, about Project GG., however, could prove to be another good exponent of the genre. Although the artistic style is not actually known, the new IP of PlatinumGames is however characterized by the classic Japanese monsters and giant heroes, which will probably fit into a distinctly action gameplay. However, various statements by the director suggest that it will be something completely new, that the action will also combine different and unique elements, so ours are only suppositions.

In short, it is a plot that works, as the titles of this type are quite consistent with the anime style. Returning therefore to the initial argument, Scarlet nexus it seems to embody this philosophy, with a hack and slash gameplay that, using original skills such as those given by psychokinesis, really has excellent potential. In case you would like to know what we think about it we leave you to our preview, reminding you that the game will be available soon on consoles and PC.
