Saint Seiya: The Knights of the Zodiac - Review of the new Netflix series

Officially debuts on Netflix, two years after the official announcement, the long-awaited reboot of one of the most loved anime ever, namely "The Zodiac Knights"Of the master Masami Kurumada. This new animated series, consisting of six episodes lasting twenty minutes each, made headlines even before its release, precisely when the news of the sex change of Shun, the knight of Andromeda. Unfortunately this new series is yet another missed opportunity by the authors to really relaunch the stories of the knights. After watching all six episodes you will find that Andromeda's sex change is perhaps the least of the problems in this series.

Saint Seiya: The Knights of the Zodiac - Review of the new Netflix seriesA reboot that does not convince

The story is more or less the same as we all know, only this time the facts take place in the present day and this can be seen from the presence of cell phones with which Seiya's friends shoot videos, also making references to "YouTube "And the" Likes "of Instagram. The four young people we have always known as Seiya, Sirius, Crystal e Shun (Shaun for this new version) after years of hard training they manage to obtain the much desired bronze armor, which once worn will make them knights in all respects: The Knights of the Zodiac at the service of goddess Athena reincarnated in the young woman Lady Isabel. The four young men along with other minor knights, will face off in a called tournament Galactic War where the winner will get by right the sacred golden armor of Sagittarius, only that in this series more than a "Galactic War" it looks like a sort of Fight Club where the only spectators are Lady Isabel and her assistant Mylock. The young knights, however, will have to deal with the knight of the phoenix, Shaun's brother, who intends to steal the sacred golden armor of the Sagittarius and eliminate the bronze knights. The four knights will have to join forces to regain possession of the sacred golden armor and will also have to try to bring back the knight of the phoenix, back from the sun full of hatred and eager for revenge. Yet another disappointing proof from the authors who are unable to relaunch "The Knights of the Zodiac" in any way. This new series manages to do even worse than the movie "The legend of the Great Temple" a few years ago. The plot is unloaded and with little bite, this is because unlike the classic version fails to characterize those moments that made the series great, thanks to the short duration of the episodes which does not allow us to dwell on some dynamics fundamental.

The subplot (if we want to call it that) is the most sensible thing in the series; Phoenix is a ruthless and fearsome knight who uses warriors with black armor, the result of years of research in the scientific field. It also does discuss the idea of using the original voice actors of the series ie Ivo De Palma, Marco Balzarotti, Luigi Rosa e Dania Cericola. It would have been much more sensible to focus on much younger voice actors given that the young age of the knights is going to clash with the age (and consequently the vocal timbre) of the original voice actors.
