Rian Johnson: "Pursuing fans is wrong"

    Rian Johnson:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has arrived, and is already making critics and audiences talk. Speaking of fans' expectations and their discussing the creative ideas of directors and screenwriters, he spoke Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi. Director he expressed himself regarding the criticism received from the fandom regarding his vision of the series, saying he is opposed to complying with the requests of the fans.

Here are words of Rian Johnson:

I think that approaching any creative process with the aim of making fans happy can be a mistake that leads to the opposite result than the one hoped for. Even speaking as a fan, if I get close to something, even if it is "something" that I think I want, if I see exactly what I imagined on the big screen I can only react with an "Ah, ok", because it could undoubtedly make me smile, but leaving me with a neutral feeling that would not lead me to rethink after what I saw, leaving me unsatisfied. I want to be shocked, I want to be surprised, I want to be taken aback, I want to see things recontextualized. The moment I sit in a cinema as a fan, I want to be challenged. What I hope to experience every time I go to the cinema is the experience I had with The Empire Strikes Again, an emotionally powerful experience that connects and goes straight to the heart of the story in a way I hadn't anticipated in the least
