Resident Evil 3: let's find out who the Tyrant Nemesis is

Il remake di Resident Evil 3 is preparing to debut in the international market, subject to postponements, the 3th April of this year. The third chapter of the horror saga created by Capcom, how long is not considered among the best in the series, is certainly remembered by all for the presence of the Nemesis, one of the most iconic enemies in gaming history. It became famous for its unbeatable (and for some too hilarious videos that have gone viral on our soil), the Nemesis is still part of the nightmares of gamers who, almost twenty-one years ago, were forced to flee from this filthy creature. But who is the Nemesis? What is its history? Let's find out together!

The origins

Let's start immediately by saying that the name chosen for this enemy is not accidental at all, far from it. In fact, its name derives from the Greek goddess "Nemesis", and this term symbolizes the "distribution of justice". The Nemesis, as even the neophytes will know, was yet another experiment of Umbrella Corporation, created with the aim of giving life to an intelligent and unstoppable monster, who was also able to use weapons like no other Tyrant. For the uninitiated the latter, in the Resident Evil universe, are gods BOW (Bio-Organic Weapons, Organic Biological Weapons) always created by the Umbrella Corporation for military purposes, in order to give life to the perfect soldier.

Resident Evil 3: let's find out who the Tyrant Nemesis isDuring the development of the original Resident Evil 3, the famous Tyrant underwent numerous design changes before the final appearance was decided. Initially, in fact, the Nemesis should have been as naked as the T-002 of the first game, but ultimately settled on a constricting garment, so that its monstrosity could be revealed gradually during the course of the adventure. Those who have not played Resident Evil 3 do not know that the creature undergoes various transformations during the game, three: specifically, gradually becoming an increasingly horrible and terrifying creature.

Obviously, however, the Nemesis is remembered by all for its original shape. The makeshift suture on the disfigured face, the glassy eye, the giant blood vessels on display and those horrifying tentacles have made this creature a design masterpiece.

The main purpose of the terrible biological weapon was in fact to destroy and eliminate any evidence or witness that could have revealed the background concerning the Umbrella Corporation, and this resulted in the elimination of any remaining agents of the STARS Special Corps.

The creature's first appearance is unforgettable (and disturbing): the protagonist Jill Valentine meets a terrified Brad Vickers, who informs the girl of the existence of this deadly creature. “He's coming for us. We both gonna die! “, These were his words, which froze the blood of both Jill and whoever held the pad in her hand. But the worst was yet to come. Outside the police department of Raccoon City the Nemesis will kill Brad after having pierced him with its slimy tentacles. From here would begin a relentless escape from the foul creature, and during the adventure the giant would chase Jill (and the player) everywhere, appearing when we least expected it. A nightmare.

Beyond Resident Evil 3

The character's popularity was such that it transcended Resident Evil 3. The Nemesis in fact made several appearances in other works related to the saga, such as the comic series Lee Chung Hing: Biohazard 3 Last Escape composed of twenty-seven numbers and inspired by the events of the game. Again with regard to the printed word, the novel by SD Perry Resident Evil: Nemesis, published by Simon & Schuster in 2000.

The Nemesis, despite itself, was also used as the main enemy of the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse, direct film from Alexander witt and written by Paul WS Anderson. The Resident Evil movie saga has experienced many lows and few, very few highs. Unfortunately, the Nemesis is not one of the latter.

In the 2004 film Nemesis was none other than the activist Matt Addison, character featured in the previous film. In Apocalypse the Nemesis preserves consciousness and humanity, and this leads to unlikely moments of romance with the character played by Milla Jovovich, so much so that in the final he will also go to the good side. So apart from the aesthetic aspect (which, being a 2004 film, wasn't too bad either), the film's Nemesis has very little to do with its polygonal counterpart.

As if the bad appearance of the aforementioned film wasn't enough, the Nemesis made numerous (and often useless) appearances in other videogame productions, which would later lead to an inexorable debasement of the character.

After a brief cameo in Resident Evil: Survivor, the villain appeared in its sequel Resident Evil: Survivor 2 Code: Veronica as an invincible boss who pushes the player to escape from the levels. After appearing in the scrolling shooter Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, the Nemesis was in spite of itself the protagonist of a phase of the game of the bad Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City di Slant Six Games, where it probably reached its lowest point within the saga.

Outside of Resident Evil, it's not like Nemesis fared any better. Leaving aside Project X Zone, a tactical RPG that saw him as a major enemy, later appeared in Under The Skin, albeit in a parody key. This appearance was probably the coup de grace given to the character, where he appeared (deliberately) clumsy and cartoonish. The creature had now lost its aura of terror and invincibility, and it now seemed impossible to give new luster to the character given the dark years that the Resident Evil saga went through between 2009 and 2016.

The rebirth(?)

As is now known, the Resident Evil saga has found new lifeblood thanks to Resident Evil VII, and subsequently to the remake of the second chapter. Capcom has finally decided to bring the series back on the right tracks, and in this historical period where nostalgia and remake go hand in hand, following the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake, a remake of the third chapter was pure formality.

The design of the "new" Nemesis has slightly different features than the original, but this updated version has managed to give the character back a dignity that by now seemed to have lost. The Nemesis is ready to return, and appears to be in better shape than ever. Capcom is reborn, and at the same time the Resident Evil saga, and it's time for the famous Tyrant to be reborn from the ashes.

Resident Evil 3 Remake will land on PC, Xbox One e PlayStation 4 in a little less than a month, that is the next 3 April 2020. And what do you think? Let us know yours via the comments and keep following us on Resources4Gaming!
