Pokémon Sword and Shield - Tried, we entered the Water-type Gym

In the last few days we have been going to try out several Nintendo games firsthand, two of which are their own Sword and Shield Pokémon, last effort with a license plate Game Freak. Let's start immediately with a premise that will make some readers turn up their noses: unfortunately we have not been informed about which of the two versions we tested: their differences did not influence our test, but the latter was really very short and concentrated solely inside the water-type gym. This first glance was however very clarifying, given that although we did not have the opportunity to test the open world created by the development house, there were elements that inevitably caught our attention.

Ready to fight

As said previously, the test was short and limited only to the water-type gym. To get to the gym leader we had to perform the classic platform actions, so as to change the flow of the water and open a passage to the actual battlefield. Here we literally walked into a stadium, surrounded by fans who couldn't wait to enjoy a fight which, on balance, was as spectacular as it was epic. The combat system is still the classic one, each creature has four abilities that you can use a limited number of times, so to get the best you will have to use a minimum of strategy.

So, regardless of the classic fights that fans will know by heart, the thing that most intrigues users is certainly the form Dynamax which varies depending on the Pokémon used. This form is limited only to the clashes that oppose us to the gym leaders and has a maximum duration of only three rounds. The idea we got was that of a temporary boost, so as not to focus the entire fight solely on this technique. When you activate this feature, your little monster will become gigantic, enhancing his moves and making them much more flashy than before. This choice seemed to us more than balanced, those who thought that this new feature would prevail in the fights were wrong, since for how it was inserted we can not say anything else that it gives variety and spectacularity to the dedicated sequence.

The heart in the details

What struck us most, net of the short duration, was the quality of the details proposed on the screen by Game Freak. Obviously it is too early to judge the overall technical quality of the work, but at present we feel like saying that the development house has taken the right path. The gym was full of waterfalls, the puzzle to be overcome was complex and we are curious to see how the other gyms will be structured. The new region was inspired by Great Britain, so even the stadiums for the fight against the leaders are heavily inspired by those of English football, super modern and with an attractive design.

It should be added then that we have discovered that Sword and Shield Pokémon It will be compatible with the Poké Ball Plus, the device that was released in the past along with Pokémon Let's Go! Pikachu and Eevee which will allow you to take a pokémon for a walk and control the game using it instead of the Joy-Con.

In conclusion we can say that, although it was not an exhaustive test, it was enough to guess which direction the work will take. The title is certainly ambitious and aims to renew the brand while remaining anchored to those cornerstones that made it great, obtaining a combination that does not distance old players but brings new ones closer. This it could really represent a kind of year zero for Pokémon, and armed with a sword and shield, you go straight towards a future that seems as giant as transformation Dynamax. We can't wait to try the full game!
