The founder and CEO of Niantic, John Hanke, today unveiled an exciting new product, which could have big implications for augmented reality games like Pokémon Go. On your own profile Twitter, Hanke revealed a teaser image of a pair of AR glasses, which could prove essential in games like Pokémon GO. The company has announced a partnership with Qualcomm in December 2019, and last July the COO of Niantic, Megan Quinn, had stated that these AR glasses could be ready "from 12 to 24 months". Quinn also said that Niantic had no desire to build this hardware, so it seems likely that its accomplishment is due to the partnership with Qualcomm, despite the Niantic branding on the glasses.

Hanke's tweet is downright intriguing, and it will be interesting to see when an official revelation can be expected for the product. Niantic has explored many ways to make its games more immersive, and AR glasses could further that goal. Of course, it remains to be seen what kind of price could players expect: At the moment, no official statements have been released, except this first image.

In addition to Pokémon GO, Niantic is also the developer of Ingress, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and an upcoming game based on the Nintendo Pikmin franchise. All of these titles could benefit from this type of technology, but Pokémon Go seems to be the most suitable. After all, Pokémon fans have dreamed of seeing creatures appear in the real world since the series debuted in 1996, and AR glasses could finally make this dream come true.

As the game approaches its fifth anniversary, we can say that Pokémon GO has evolved in ways that players could never have expected way back in 2016. If Niantic is to continue attracting players, it will always have to find new ways to evolve the game. , and AR glasses could definitely be the next step in the experience, for Niantic and for Pokémon GO.
