PlayStation says goodbye to communities, that's when they stop

A press release published by Sony announces the end of the function PlayStation Community in April with the arrival of the patch 8.5 to PlayStation 4. Support for the service will be available for a few more weeks, and currently allows PlayStation 4 users a greater form of sharing their gaming experiences through community posts and the like. But in the opinion of the Japanese house, this function is not sufficiently used by the players to continue to support it, therefore in a vision of simple evaluation of costs and benefits. It is certain, however, that for thousands of communities around the world this will be a rude awakening, although Sony's attitude on the matter was known.

    Sony in fact stated:

Thank you for using the Community feature on your PlayStation4 console. As of April 2021, this feature will no longer be supported or available on your PS4 console (…) However, you will still be able to stay connected and enjoy messaging features and more on your PS4 console and PlayStation App.

So this specific service will stop to be maintained, though obviously Sony has already stated on several occasions that it still wants to continue to support PlayStation 4 in the following years, so at least on this point there is nothing to fear. Furthermore, according to the press release, it will still be possible to keep in touch with your friends through the classic messages and the functions of thePlayStation app. On the other hand, however, the change will result in the closure of the thousands of communities created around the world with the dedicated function, and the impossibility of opening new ones; as already happens on PlayStation 5, where Sony has never implemented the feature all the time for the same reason. However, we must point out that on PS5 there is already some sort of replacement, with the functionality Game Base which serves to unite players to a particular video game with social functionality.

In addition, the aforementioned patch 8.5 will entail not only the cessation of support for the community functionality, but also some slight changes to the system, such as the request to be able to participate in a game session, the way in which thehost to send an invitation and the method of not showing others what games you are playing, if you have previously hidden the title by setting the privacy.
