PlayStation 5 will only be backward compatible with PS4, according to SIE's CEO

One of the hottest topics of recent months at home Sony, about the new one PlayStation 5, was the much talked about "phenomenon" of backward compatibility. In these last generations the consoles of the Japanese giant almost always did not offer the possibility of being able to play the physical titles of the past generations through the most current machine. With PS5 this theme seemed to have changed its tune, potentially offering everyone the chance to play every single title on PS One, PS2, PS3 and PS4. However, Sony had never released official information in this regard, and just last night, following the showcase that was held, Jim Ryan made some important statements on this issue.

We know that PS5 will be backwards compatible with 99% of PS4 games; however, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, during an interview with the famous magazine Famitsu immediately after the show, stated that the console will not allow to play the older titles of the past generations (PS4 excluded) because there was not enough time to work on it:

We have in mind the specialized engineering for PS5, as we produced the device. In the midst of it all, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they should play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so we included PS4 compatibility. While implementing this system, we also tried to focus our efforts on using the high-speed SSD and the new DualSense controller. Unfortunately, we weren't able to achieve compatibility with early generation consoles in time.

At the moment, therefore, the only way to be able to play the older games of past generations remains the service PlayStation Now, or take out of the boxes the very first game consoles that Sony has produced. Finally, we remind you that the launch of PlayStation 5 is scheduled for November 19 2020 in Europe for the price of € 399 All-Digital version and € 499 Standard.
