PlayStation 5: SSD will not revolutionize open world titles

Last week the presentation dedicated to the hardware architecture of PlayStation 5, which focused mainly on the specifics of theSSD, one of the most interesting features of the new console of Sony, but according to the words of several industry experts, this it will not significantly affect open world games.

In a recent post on the forums of ResetEra, the content producer of Digital Foundry, Alexander Battaglia, commented on the console's SSD, noting that open world titles won't get any noteworthy design benefits, as the data extracted from the SSD would be static data, while those present in these types of games would increase the elements and variety of details through procedural methods. We report below what Battaglia said:

I've written it elsewhere, people saying things about the SSD, which will allow open world games to look completely different, but it doesn't make much sense, as we don't really know how the game world was developed.

All data extracted from the SSD would be static data, completely immutable. This would mean that perfectly predefined data and level arrangements, which is the exact opposite methodology of how modern open world games increase their detail and variety of elements, which happens through a procedural method that does not live on the disc ... There are procedural methods for increase the efficiency of the artists and diversity of the game world and even increase the details beyond the static designs.

Furthermore, Alexander Battaglia highlighted how the But by the full GPU acceleration tech available to Xbox Series X is clearly higher than that of PlayStation 5.

The Xbox Series X GPU is simply better, all-round. Just like this generation with PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
