PlayStation 5: new updates on backward compatibility

PlayStation 5: new updates on backward compatibility

One of the hottest topics of recent months at home Sony obviously concerns the arrival of PlayStation 5. With the advent of the new generation, many have wondered about the much talk of backward compatibility, totally absent on PlayStation 4 and at the same time strong point of the offer Xbox One.

We know for sure that PlayStation 5 will be backwards compatible with 99% of the games in the PlayStation 4 catalog; however the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan, during an interview with the famous magazine Famitsu immediately after the event dedicated to the new generation console, he stated that PS5 will not allow to play titles belonging to the PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 generations because there was not enough time to work on them:

We have in mind the specialized engineering for PS5, as we produced the device. In the midst of it all, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they should play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so we included PS4 compatibility. While implementing this system, we also tried to focus our efforts on using the high-speed SSD and the new DualSense controller. Unfortunately, we weren't able to achieve compatibility with early generation consoles in time.

In the last few hours, however, other news has arrived about it. According to the insider Marlon Gaming Nation this backward compatibility issue could be solved through the service PlayStation Now, which will be renewed in view of the advent of the new generation:

I have received word from a research firm regarding PS5 Backwards compatibility. Apparently Sony will be revamping PlayStation now with new server blades. And Ps1 to Ps3 games will be available via cloud new subscription service. Hopefully this is true stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/YU68mgBPNb

I received news from a research company regarding backward compatibility of PS5. Sony will apparently renew PlayStation Now with new blade servers. And PS1 to PS3 games will be available via the new cloud subscription service. Hopefully, stay tuned.

However, it cannot be ruled out that the new service will be available in the future PlayStation Plus Collection may also include titles belonging to past generations. We just have to wait for new official information about it.
