PlayStation 5 - Here's what we know about the Sony console

The recent conference "The Road to PlayStation 5"of Mark Cerny it certainly did not manage to break through the hearts of the public, who would have preferred much less technical details, as well as greater concreteness. The games were missing, as well as the actual design of the machine, but certainly not very in-depth details on the technical specifications. Sony has managed to conquer this videogame generation in a big way, offering consumers many prestigious exclusives that have outlined the lineup of PlayStation 4, which goes towards the valley of the sunset with the next ones The Last of us Part 2 e Ghost of Tsushima. Summing up what has been declared - and also including the information already in our possession -, we can therefore list all the characteristics of PlayStation 5 currently known, also highlighting the rumors that surround the veil of mystery about Sony's next flagship. It is good to consider that the communication process of the software house is still in its infancy, so most of the details are still hidden.

Price and release date

The price and release date for PlayStation 5 have not been officially revealed, although there are numerous rumors about it. The launch window stands, as for Xbox Series X, at "Holiday 2020". However, it must be added that, despite the denials made by Microsoft, there is a concrete possibility of witnessing a postponement of the outputs following the problems that arose with the arrival of the Coronavirus, which in fact slowed down the work on the machine, in particular on its manufacture, to the point that many have begun to hypothesize the move of both consoles in the first months of 2021, in particular in March.

PlayStation 5 technical features

Mark Cerny's conference, as well as various more specific details, showed the public all the internal features of PlayStation 5: here they are listed.

  • CPU (Processor): 8x AMD Zen 2 a 3.5 GHz of frequency
  • GPU (Video Card / Graphics Card): AMD RDNA 2 Custom (10.28 TFLOPs, 36CU at 2.23 GHz frequency)
  • RAM: 16GB GDDR6/ 256-bit
  • Storage memory: 825GB Custom SSD

Unfortunately, we still don't know anything about the design of the console and its ports. Also, while most of the PS5's features have not currently been declared, we know for sure that the console will use the Ray Tracing hardware thanks to support from AMD. The SSD promises to guarantee zero load and power-up times.

PlayStation 5 games

Although it has been stated that some titles are already designed for PlayStation 5, such as Godfall, originally presented during The Game Awards 2019 and proved capable of attracting not a little public attention despite the incredibly skimpy bits of gameplay unveiled to the public for now, Sony has not yet announced any exclusive for the next generation, a situation that to be honest it was at least predictable and will certainly be remedied over the next few months

Backwards compatibility

During the conference, Mark Cerny highlighted how PlayStation 5 will support a good portion of the PS4 catalog, improving the performance of games with the coveted 60 frames per second. Backward compatibility will extend to software and physical discs, but there is no confirmation yet for support for the first three PlayStation. After an initial confusion on the statements made, it was confirmed that most of the titles released on Playstation 4 will be easily playable on Playstation 5, while 100 titles in particular (but which will further increase over the next few years) will benefit from particular improvements thanks to the power of the new Sony machine.

Peripherals and services

Il DualShock 5 it's still a mystery, but we know the PlayStation VR it can be used on new hardware, which will therefore also have backwards compatibility for a part of the catalog of VR titles on PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether these titles will be able to enjoy any improvements.

Sony home services are currently the PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, which will undoubtedly also be brought into the new generation, although the software house has not yet provided any details on the matter.

Rumors on PlayStation 5

Many rumors point to an improvement in PlayStation 4 services on the next console. In some cases we speak of a PlayStation Plus not required to play online, as seen on PlayStation 3, but also of a PlayStation Now improved in performance, final resolution and catalog of available games. The streaming service could remedy the lack of backward compatibility for the past generations, in a more than excellent way given the single cost to be incurred for a potentially immense catalog.PlayStation 5 - Here's what we know about the Sony console

We are quite certain that Sony will want to push the Virtual Reality sector more with PlayStation 5, probably proposing a PlayStation VR 2 enhanced and suitable for next generation VR games, but compatible with those of today. Some entries see the new device included in a Day One bundle, although there is no confirmation about it. However, it is certain that the current PlayStation VR can be exploited further for the next generation, as it could become compatible with more advanced games, albeit castrating its graphic and technical performance.

The DualShock 5 is still a complete mystery, even if the rumors about the atypical feedback and some interesting surprises never stop emerging. We do not know if the DualShock 4 will be compatible with the new console, nor if the next proprietary controller can be used on the current generation. It is possible that the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is compatible with the new console, given its recent release.

Many are considering a possible opening of Sony to the PC market, given the imminent arrival of Death Stranding e Horizon Zero Dawn on Windows systems. The Decima Engine has been cleared to exit the PlayStation ecosystem, so further structured products on the latter could actually be released as early as its Day One on PC and PlayStation 5, but the opening could also open up for the other engines exploited by Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
