PlayStation 5 and the Euromediashop case: an 800 thousand euro scam

PlayStation 5 and the Euromediashop case: an 800 thousand euro scam

Unfortunately, as many fans of the sector will already know, the pre-orders of PlayStation 5 in the rest of the world they ended up in a few hours in most stores, both physical and online. This has meant that many evildoers have sought to give take advantage of discontent of all those people who have not managed to reserve a console with systems sales at at least double the original price (the so-called touts or 'scalpers'), or by cheating them directly with fake online ads. This is the case of "Euromediashop“, An online store opened a few weeks ago that strangely still had a lot of PlayStation 5s available to pre-order, as well as a lot of other electronic products… but that actually they never even existed.

The scam was born from that Christian Ciciriello, a 25-year-old from Brindisi who has decided to create a fake e-commerce site created ad hoc to take advantage of all those who have not managed to buy the new console of Sony, promising thousands of people a PlayStation or a new iPhone which later turned out to be completely non-existent. To dupe the unfortunate users who ended up on the site, Ciciriello would have bought a package of bots from another site that offers this type of services, which they released lots of fake positive reviews to its portal, making many people trust more of what Euromediashop promised. The site has been online for almost a month and after accumulating more than 13 thousand orders, For a total of over 800 thousand euros in wire transfers, disappeared into thin air, deactivating both the customer service number and the Facebook page dedicated to the web page.

The media attention, certainly triggered by the flood of reports of worried people they saw the site literally disappear from one second to the next, she immediately noticed this scam, prompting the young Apulian to turn himself in, admitting that he was pushed by too much greed. By now the money is sadly gone - apparently donated to charity, even if there are no confirmations about it - and Ciciriello will be investigated for scam after admitting that he opened the site in good faith, but then the situation got out of hand.
