From the 20th of this month until today, the Online Beta of the Japanese football title par excellence: PES 2018. Obviously, this version has been continuously updated and, as specified by Konami, what we play today is not yet what the final product will be. The Online Beta Open Access It has until now been available on PlayStation 4 without the need for the Plus subscription, while on Xbox One players had to have a Live Gold subscription. As this is a Beta exclusively for online multiplayer components, obviously only quick single matches and co-op matches are available (up to 3 against 3). Beyond the quality of the servers, therefore, we were still able to put our hand on the title by testing the validity of the gameplay offered.After confirming the setting of the controls, obviously the first thing I wanted to try is the classic 1 vs 1 game. Even if it is only a Beta, I could not help but turn up my nose a little in front of the small one. number of teams that could be selected: only France and Brazil. In terms of content, in fact, this Online Beta proved to be very meager and practically dedicated to naked and raw online gameplay only. For example, there is only one stadium available, the Neu Sonne Arena, a stadium that does not really exist and was created by the team from scratch, taking a little inspiration from some existing stadiums. The matchmaking filters remain the same, who with sufficient precision select the opponent according to our requests, based on the level of courtesy or the level of skill. As for the selection of teammates and opponents, the criterion implemented for the co-op mode is slightly different, in addition to the standard parameters, it also takes into account the player's level of this parameter, which increases according to our behavior in the game (and how much we will be able to play as a team).

At the game level, hand on pad, it seems that the pace of matches in PES 2018 has reached a level of "slowness" never seen before. Do not take this statement in the negative, because in many ways the player's actions, the changes of face, and the movements themselves, turned out to be much more realistic. To pay the costs of course a more cumbersome and in some cases less intuitive game construction system, which brutally collides with a not very fast response to commands. Not being able to test numerous teams, we cannot ascertain whether the very good skill of the goalkeepers (and the more or less high difficulty to score) is linked to the player himself or to a recalculated general average. Same thing also applies to different characteristics that could not be changed in the demo, such as the severity of the referee or the level of the AI ​​(which will replace the players if some decide to leave the game in progress).

On the technical and graphic level, unfortunately, there are many aspects to complain, such as the clearly clear effect of the player's "blur" during replays, which however also affects a good portion of space even on the field itself, almost as if it were a sticky card. on the screen. Even the details on the pitch during the game do not exactly scream a miracle, and everything makes us think that this demo version of the game is quite old (perhaps also for this reason the Japanese company has specified several times that it is not the final product) and not taken care of, used at the moment only to test the ability of servers and their speed. The last thing that makes you grind your teeth is the absurd duration of the uploads, not only during the search for companions and opponents, but also between menu changes, in the passage from replay to gameplay, and of course at the beginning of the game. In short, a result that does not leave us very satisfied, a "warning" that we hope will be unfounded when PES 2018 arrives on the shelves.
