Three years ago, around this time, we found ourselves reviewing that giant of 5 person; an RPG of this genre is rarely born, and the way it blended unique and exceptional style with deep and fun gameplay was truly magical. However, the brand is not new to revisiting these stories: the two previous chapters had already found new lifeblood. In Japan, many (successful) games manage to return to the spotlight thanks to the addition of bosses, battles, equipment and much more, and so it was with Person 5 Royal, In which Atlus after three years from the release in the West of the original chapter, it proposes the stories of Joker and his companions with numerous new features.

Improvements for all tastes

Although the additions are so many that they need to be revisited, we have already said many things and in this review we will limit ourselves to talking only about what has improved with Persona 5 Royal, what has remained the same or what has deteriorated.

From a gameplay point of view, the production has made a clear (and further) step forward: the already well-functioning gameplay has now become more fluid, without those tedious slowdowns that characterized the original title. THE Baton Pass, which in the past were blocked and could only be unlocked through the Confidant rank, are now immediately available and more functional in obtaining benefits. Another novelty concerns the guns, now much more important than they were before.



All this goes to oil the already fantastic Mementos, optional dungeons that in Persona 5 Royal obtain a greater pleasantness in terms of completion, greatly loosening the feeling of grinding that was given in Persona 5. All this was not the work of particular additions, but of adjustments to the reward system, so as to make their completion flow more lightly and, consequently, take the flow of the game to the next level.

The balance of values, drops and statistics even lead to making the grinding - necessary - something pleasant and fun, which rarely turns out to be so. The general filing, in short, makes the already sharp blade of the brand even sharper, moving the gameplay to a state of near perfection. Refinement doesn't just come in combat: even long chats, useful for improving social skills, now last less and are faster, while Palaces are now shorter, have fewer puzzles and rooms, and can be completed in less time.

All that glitters is not gold

Unfortunately, when it comes close to perfection, standards are touched that must be respected: this is why the problem related to the plot is clear. With Persona 3 FES, the revisited version of the original game, a process of adding a plot was carried out: after the finale, in fact, the game presented another part of the story directly connected, but posthumous to the conclusion of Persona 3. This time, with Persona 5 Royal the choice was to remove the original ending and create a new one, adding a new semester.

In addition, new characters are added: they "mix" in the crowd quickly, but unfortunately, going forward in the plot we find ourselves in front of a script that appears hasty, all accompanied by a closure that leaves open questions related to these new entry. Another thing that unfortunately is worse than the original is not so much a "lack" as a "lack of action“: Despite the high level of the Persona 5 storyline, some issues were well known (after thousands of feedbacks left by users). Unfortunately this was not enough to push the developers to change these dynamics: this can only be a flaw in the game, a lack that certainly needed to be treated in a better way.



We think about closing the package of problems the end: as we said, the ending of the original game was, although with some problems, well structured both in terms of gameplay and closure of the plot. He defined fixed points and closed the story in a clean way, without hindrance. The new ending, on the other hand, leaves the doors open to a lot of content - perhaps to take advantage of the brand again - and proposes a boss fight so fast and action-packed that it doesn't even give the time to enjoy it well.

The thing that is really strange, however, is the choice: although the game has been revised, the idea of ​​proposing everything in the Royal edition is to make fans happy but above all to make new players try the title. We are talking about a game that has been subtitled in Spanish, which the original did not have. Yet the ending, in its chaos, it remains understandable only by those who have finished the original, while if you are a novice it will be even more confusing.


The last sore point is the localization: although having it in Spanish is a big step forward, a little knowledge of the English language is enough to be able to compare the two translations.
