Override 2 Super Mech League - Review of mecha wrestlers

Override 2 Super Mech League starts from an extremely simple but potentially intriguing assumption, huge combat robots that have to lead their hands. So, at first glance, the title of Modus Games it would seem to have all the credentials to appear in the public eye as an adrenaline-pumping and fun experience… but unfortunately this is not the case. A mecha-themed fighting game could very closely resemble old Transformers video games, and its release on virtually all platforms - PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S - it could suggest a work done with care, just a pity that it takes very little to see the shaky house of cards set up by the team collapse.

"Non-existent" reflexes

We don't want to go around it too much; sadly, Override 2 Super Mech League is not a good game. It is woody, the key combinations do not connect well with each other and are very few, as well as there are not so many mechas available (there are just twenty). On closer inspection, while taking up some characteristics, the production is kept at a safe distance from the more classic fighting games, both for a particularly limited number of moves, and for a control and management structure of its robot at least atypical, where every limb will be controlled by a specific key. The idea, which initially appears undoubtedly intriguing, however collides with a total lack of fluidity in the movements and with a woodiness so problematic as to make the clashes unmanageable at times. But what are the possibilities proposed by Modus Games for Override 2 Super Mech League? Well obviously it is possible to play in co-op mode (both local and online) and in multiplayer.

The story mode of the first chapter was replaced by the League, in which it is possible to play against the CPU in collaboration with other players (if they are not available, they will be replaced by the AI). The whole, however, will have a reason for being, which can be summarized in our agent, who will see potential in us and it will push us to fight to get more attention and become the undisputed champions of the championship. On closer inspection, however, everything only serves as a sop to try to differentiate - badly - the normal multiplayer from the plot. Our aim will win all matches and try to go from an F to an S. Furthermore, by playing and winning matches we will earn money or, again, useful bonuses that will be unlocked only in case we have to perform certain actions, such as blocking a certain number of attacks or performing certain moves. The types of fights are: 1v1, 2v2, and free-for-all.

The game coin is used to unlock other mechas and customize the ones we have, but here comes another problem for Override 2 Super Mech League: it lacks depth to customization. By this we mean that the work it is limited to different colors for the limbs and very few decorations. It doesn't really change much from the basic version to what we can create, which is certainly a shame, given its also being an online game. We can say that unfortunately Override 2 Super Mech League is a title born with rust on it, in the sense that it already seems "old", as understandable looking at the poor combat system present. Mecha animations are almost all the same and there is no strategy whatsoever to be applied in combat, simply press all the keys hoping that something will happen on the screen. And unfortunately, all this is not fun, given that even in the lightest fighting games or beat 'em ups there is still a minimum of strategy that can stratify the experience. At the very least, the maps appear pleasantly diversified, albeit devoid of any element to interact with.

Technically sufficient

Speaking from a distinctly technical point of view, Override 2 Super Mech League is just enough of a game. During our tests we did not have serious technical problems such as bugs or glitches. The only real problem is what ruins the gameplay, that is, that slight input lag that does not allow the concatenation of the combos, except when you press the button repeatedly, creating that feeling of woodiness already mentioned above. Visually, the experience does not shine, but we must still consider the technical barriers imposed by Nintendo Switch and by a budget that is anything but exciting.

Precisely for this reason, even if the resolution is not very high, the game appears quite enjoyable. The visual effects are not impressed and are quite simple, as are the soundtrack or sound effects. Simply put, Override 2 Super Mech League screams mediocrity from every pixel. A pity, since it could have been a good title to bring back the desire for mecha-themed fighting games, a sub-genre that has been missing for a while in the modern gaming market.

Is it worth it?

So is Override 2 Super Mech League worth buying? The answer is no, especially in case you are fighting game fans; furthermore, we would like to advise against it for anyone looking for a healthy challenge. Precisely for this reason, in fact, we could recommend it more to those who want to waste time with friends without too many pretensions, even if the input lag could quickly make the desire to play vanish. Therefore, despite the rather affordable price, until some errors are eliminated or there are no improvements, we advise you to turn your gaze elsewhere.

A pity, a shot in the barrel completely wasted that of Modus Games, which this time was not able to give the best of itself during the development phases of its creature. However, it remains an interesting project, and it is not certain that some patches cannot solve the most suffered problems. We all remember the The Witcher 3 combat system at launch, right? Of course, CD Projekt RED and Modus Games are two software houses completely different, but it is not certain that something "broken" cannot be fixed; and we can only hope so.
