Nexon invests in Konami, SEGA, Bandai and Hasbro: the figure is staggering

In a press release released this morning, the South Korean-Japanese developer Nexon announced that it has invested in four popular entertainment companies: Konami, SEGA, Bandai Namco and Hasbro (the owner of W). The total amount invested is $ 874 million; these are to be considered “long-term friendly investments with no intention of acquisition or activism”, as stated by Owen Mahoney, President and CEO by Nexon.

We believe that companies with strong and well-managed global IP are often overlooked and undervalued in a market that is strictly focused on introducing new IPs. These investments reflect our respect for management teams that create and grow global properties over a period of years and decades. We believe each of them has the potential to take advantage of the centuries-old shift from linear formats to interactive entertainment.

These investments represent a good use of our cash in a low interest environment and we are extremely pleased with the initial results. While leveraging partnerships was not a consideration in our investment decisions, we are pleased with the dialogue that has followed with some companies.

This isn't Nexon's first investment in other gaming companies. In November 2018, the company made a "major strategic investment" on Embark Studios, a Swedish development team founded by former EA and DICE executive Patrick Söderlund. Over the years, Nexon has released several successful games such as Vindictus, MapleStory and mainly Dungeon Fighter Online, which is one of the most played and highest grossing games of all time with over 15 billion in revenue.

Konami, SEGA, Bandai and Hasbro are names of a certain thickness in the videogame field, and we are sure that this investment for Nexon means focusing strongly on the market in the coming years. This year, Nexon is then expected to release the free-to-play racing game KartRider: Drift, coming up PC e Xbox One with crossplay functionality.
