Nanotale: Typing Chronicles - Preview of the new Fishing Cactus title

Good results and good intentions, if cultivated with the right passion, always lead to something better. Perseverance and the artistic vision of Fishing Cactus have always been the focal point of the team, and after the excellent results obtained with the acclaimed Epistory: Typing Chronicles, they present themselves to the public with a new title linked to the same playful concept. It is about Nanotal: Typing Chronicles, and not only because of its name, it is the spiritual continuation of the previous title. This new work from the Belgian team is currently available on Steam in Early Access, slightly late on the schedule set (the title was scheduled for last September). What is available online is in fact about the first 35% of the game, while the full version should arrive according to forecasts between February and March 2020.

Story of a world

In Nanotal: Typing Chronicles we will find ourselves in the shoes of Rosalind, a young woman archivist who will have to venture into a world near collapse, dying. In fact, the "heart of magic" has something wrong and the narrative incipit will see us embark on a journey in these lands to discover and solve the problem. How will we do this? Clearly in the way an archivist sorceress can act, which is by cataloging her mysteries, defeating various threats and digging deeply to uncover the truth.

The first 5 minutes of the game will be more than clarifying, giving us a lot of the information we have: on the narrative level, we will find ourselves taking notes on a diary that will also tell the brief background of Rosalind and something about the way in which the archivists operate, but above all we will find ourselves living a simple tutorial that will direct us base after base to the world of Nanotale. In any case, our protagonist will not be passive and will never lose the opportunity to confide to the player (figuratively) his thoughts. Soon she will then be accompanied by a new travel companion, who, as in her predecessor, will always be a fox.

Tracing the good things done with Epistory, even in Nanotale the way to defend ourselves and get rid of obstacles will be to use our magic to the sound of typed words. The build currently available however has no alternative languages to English (even in the previous title the localization was inserted only later) and therefore the challenge for the average players could be a little more complicated than expected. However, the game structure seemed very particular to us, resulting in a good surprise: exploring the game maps currently available, we noticed a particular care in the level design that in addition to the environmental puzzles we were already used to, are enriched with areas where we can exploit tall grass to stay hidden from enemies and carry out real ambushes.

The visual impact is really pleasant, with a technical sector that abandons the simplistic level of detail of Epistory (which despite many "low poly" features was still more than impressive). Even the effects of the spells are rendered better on the screen, as well as the text boxes and the representation of Rosalind's diary that enrich even the parts disconnected from the environment.

Narratively, the game manages to involve a lot, and creating empathy with the protagonist will be easy, because we will immediately feel part of that world, increasingly weaker and more and more in danger. Our first hours of travel were therefore more than satisfactory and the challenge offered is certainly not to be taken lightly. We are really curious to find out how the various updates will improve the general enjoyment, but above all to correct a couple of tedious bugs that inevitably occurred during the experience. Given the team's proven experience, we are confident that the result will be more than good.

Stay tuned for the next updates on Nanotale!
