Mindhunter: the Netflix series will not have a third season

Since the second season of Mindhunter, the branded drama Netflix about FBI agents chasing serial killers, was released over a year ago, fans wondered if a third season was possible. Hopes are gone when the stars of the show, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, were released from their contracts that tied them to the series in January. Now David Fincher, executive producer, director and showrunner, confirmed in a recent interview that the series will not have a third season.

I honestly don't think we will be able to do one season for less than what we earned with the second. At some point you also have to look at the reality of the facts. The expense must have an economic return.
Apparently, the calculation does not play in Mindhunter's favor,

The director, however, left a small opening, saying that perhaps at a later time Netflix could think again and focus on the series again in the future:

They told me: "Finish Mank [Netflix movie directed by Fincher himself, Ed.] And then let's see how you feel", but I honestly don't think we will be able to do a better job than we did in the second season. However, I believe that Netflix is willing to keep a small opening still open.

The series is based on the book by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas Mindhunter: The true story of America's first serial killer hunter (Mind Hunter: Inside FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit). The protagonists of the events are two FBI agents and a psychologist who investigate serial killers in a completely innovative way, or by entering their minds in order to understand their modus operandi. There official synopsis of the series reads:

In the late 70s, two FBI agents boost criminology by delving into the psychology of killers and making contact with monsters that are too real.
