Middlewest - Review of the new comic by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona

It comes thanks to Bao Publishing, the new work written by Skottie young or Middlewest. The American artist, who has already made himself appreciated with his previous work, namely "I hate Favolandia“, He wants to repeat himself but this time with the help of the Venezuelan cartoonist Jorge Corona. This exciting new work, which is having some success in the United States, is ready to amaze even readers. Skottie Young, with his irreverent style, wanted to pay homage to dark fantasy works such as "La storia infinita"And"The Wizard of Oz”Which, just like“ Middlewest ”, have brave and motivated teenagers as protagonists.

Screen

The story is set in the American town of Farmington. Abel, the young protagonist of this story, delivers newspapers for work and gets up early enough every morning to deliver the newspapers to his town. One day, however, the young man does not wake up in time and decides that he would skip work for that day, thus unleashing the wrath of his father who finds him wandering around Farmington. Abel has a bad relationship with his father and the discussion that follows is also the fruit of this. Between the two, pushes and big words fly and the discussion goes on until, under the incredulous eyes of the young Abel, his father turns into a real "human tornado" who, blinded by anger, razes their house to the ground and all this. that appears in front of him. The boy, who a few years earlier had been abandoned by his mother, is now alone, embittered and full of anger. So the young man, accompanied by a talking fox, decides to travel to those lands unknown to him in search of his own place in the world. In this journey into the unknown there will be twists, obstacles and unexpected encounters that will put a strain on the temper of this "strange couple".

A success announced

Middlewest is presented as a work that is truly suitable for anyone which is quite different from some of the works of the same genre mentioned above. Younger readers will be fascinated by Abel's scenario and adventures, while older readers will be able to better understand some important issues such as family and domestic violence, the needs of young people who are always looking for new adventures as opposed to the wishes of their parents. who would like to stay close to their child.

Jorge Corona's style fits perfectly with the story that Skottie Young wants to tell us, giving this work an important graphic style that, thanks to its warm and well-balanced colors, manages to make every Middlewest table unique. A story of original growth and formation, made up of boundless landscapes, incredible adventures and continuous twists, without forgetting to touch on important issues. A linear and well-written story that has the merit of knowing how to tell itself without the need to dwell too much on some chapters. The only "flaw" of this volume is having neglected the action part that I found really too hasty. A note of merit goes to Bao Pubblishing who had the intuition to bring the works of the American artist Skottie Young.
