Microsoft: officially acquired the smash.gg eSport platform

Through a banner that appeared on the site, the eSports smash.gg has communicated that it has been totally acquired by Microsoft products, thus becoming part of the numerous companies recently acquired by the company of Redmond. Over the past few years, Microsoft has acquired a large number of first-party studios and solidified its status as a leader in video game software. With an unexpected move for all players, the company seems to have cast the first look too to the world of eSports, acquiring one of the most famous and used platforms in the sector regarding the organization of tournaments.

Smash.gg was born in 2015, when a group of esports fans decided to create a space where players could easily organize Super Smash Bros. tournaments. Over the past few years, the site has grown to support the organization of a large number of events across a broad spectrum of video games. The site is responsible for providing assistance with registration and keeping track of the brackets for online eSports events, as well as managing the live tournaments of all the different categories of importance.

Until now, Microsoft has certainly not stayed out of the esports space, considering that some of the company's most popular games, such as Halo, Gears and Forza, they regularly host big eSports events and live streams, plus Microsoft has a website completely dedicated to keeping fans connected and informed on the latest eSports news. It remains to be seen exactly what the company plans to do after the smash.gg acquisition, although through the announcement of the purchase, the site has made it clear that smash.gg will continue its journey as self-service platform available to all organizers.

Since we started in 2015, our main goal has always been to create active eSports communities around people who love to play. Today we are thrilled to be able to take the next step on our journey by joining Microsoft to strengthen our existing relationships and to be able to explore new opportunities. Smash.gg will continue to be a self-service esports platform, available to tournament organizers from all different gamer communities.
