Microsoft has decided to discontinue Cortana on iOS and Android

When Apple he announced years ago Crab, on the occasion of the launch of iPhone 4S and iOS 5, many were amazed by the possibility of being able to count on a personal assistant inside their smartphone that can be controlled by voice. In the following years, Google e Microsoft products released their voice assistants, integrating the functionalities offered by Siri within their respective ecosystems, Android e Windows. And if Google Assistant was able to achieve some success thanks to the versatility of its responses, Microsoft Cortana instead it suffered the greater popularity of its main rivals, prompting Microsoft to suspend it on Android and iOS.

A note on the Microsoft support page leaves no room for doubt and, for the sake of completeness, we report it below:

Starting March 31, 2021, Cortana content you have created, such as reminders and lists, will no longer work in the Cortana mobile app, but will still be accessible through Cortana on Windows.

Made available by the Redmond company also on the operating systems of its main rivals, Cortana has never obtained the trust and success desired by Microsoft, ending up with a decidedly low and anti-economic volume of installed bases to be kept active. Considering instead the important results obtained by Amazon with the most recent Alexa, it is evident that the voice assistant of the company founded by Bill Gates has not been able to attract interest from users of other platforms.

All the features that were previously present within Cortana, i.e. lists, reminders and tasks, will be made available within the app Microsoft To Do. The withdrawal of the app and the end of support on Android and iOS are therefore an important sign of surrender, following a recent statement by the company's CEO, Satya Nadella, which no longer considered Cortana to be a competitor of Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
