Kingdom Hearts III: explanation of the ending and theories about the future of the series - SPOILER WARNING

Kingdom Hearts III is finally available, we have talked about the game extensively in our review, but today we want to address another thorny topic, or the ending. For obvious reasons, if you read this article, we assume that your adventure is over, and you have already seen the two final videos, namely "Epilogue" and "Yozora".

OF COURSE THOSE WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED THE GAME AVOID CONTINUING READING: THERE ARE SPOILERS. THE BIG ONES, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GAME FINAL, HEAVY REVEALS AND, SINCERELY, I DON'T RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO HAS NOT COMPLETED THE GAME, TO CONTINUE READING.

If you need some help completing the new title Square Enix, we remind you that we have an entire section dedicated to guides including Kingdom Hearts III.

End of the adventure

Once the final battle is over, the whole group finds themselves in the Keyblade Graveyard, convinced that the great battle has come to its conclusion. Sora immediately points out that there is one more task to be done: find Kairi who was "killed" by Xehanort. However, Xion shortly after pointed out that Sora's friend is actually fine, and that in one way or another it will come back. Our hero decides to go in search of Kairi alone, so that he can finally hug her again.

The last video is dedicated to the protagonists, all gathered at the Destiny Islands. The shot then suddenly shifts to Sora and Kairi, hand by hand alone. However Sora's image fades shortly after, with young Kairi sitting there with tears on her face. What could all this mean? My personal reading is that the girl was eventually found, but something happened to Sora. In fact, if we take a small step back, more exactly when Sora uses the power of awakening to find the hearts of all his friends, we notice that at the end of the fight with the Lich, Young Xehanort appears. The enemy explains to Sora that, that particular heartless that is not as common as the others, but his job is to ferry hearts into the depths of darkness. Shortly thereafter he also increases the dose, specifying that such reckless use of the power of awakening has a price to pay, and Sora is now doomed having used it all those times.

To reconnect with Kairi's speech, therefore, we can deduce that Sora may have used the power of awakening again to find her friend, well aware of the risks, but without caring too much. But as Kingdom Hearts teaches, there is always another way. During the phase of the labyrinth of despair, once Luxord is defeated, the latter accepts defeat and gives a Jolly to Sora, stating that it will come in handy sooner or later. We saw something similar in Chain of Memoris, when Ansem gives the power of darkness to Riku by claiming that he might need it, and so it will. This Jolly would therefore be a possible way out, and if we also think about the symbolism of the cards in the saga, considering this detail irrelevant would be short-sighted.

Epilogue

Here matters get more complicated than expected, but it is still possible to make quite concrete theories thanks to the information released. First we understood that we can act in various timelines, this becomes even clearer when Riku, shortly after the adventure begins, decides to leave his broken Keyblade in the world of darkness, convinced that it could be useful to another himself. Continuing with the epilogue, however, the first thing that shocks is the return of the Lost Masters. Their arrival takes place via a special portal, something never seen before within the saga.

The four who participated in the Keyblade War, namely Ira, Aced, Invi and Gula are in the presence of Luxu, who turns out to be Xigbar, even though inside is still the Lost Master explains that he has changed various bodies in all of these years. The first thing to note however is the box, as named as it is desired in this Kingdom Hearts III. A cut gives us a vision of Peter and Maleficent, who finally know the location of this object and, in a certain sense, are preparing to act, also considering that before disappearing from the images they separate going in two opposite directions. From this moment the conversation between the masters is the only important thing, also considering what can be discovered through the secret diaries present in the game.

In fact, although the four did not know anything about Luxu's mission, we discover that the latter has finished his task after many years, and so does Ava, who was the only one to know the mission of the Lost Master. However Ava is not present at the roll call, Luxo thus reveals that in reality even the teacher has adhered to her duties, concluding them successfully, but unable to return. From here on, total darkness, as we don't know anything about what happened in the past. As mentioned above, diaries come in handy. Thanks to which we discover that long ago Ansem the Wise had found a girl of about 15 years, who did not remember anything about her and her past. This was targeted, in a good way, by Lea and Saix, who find this girl imprisoned in the Dark Fortress. The two began to sneak into the facility most evenings, so as to spend time with her. But one day it was gone, mysteriously disappeared. Through another report we can understand that, after Xehanort initiates strange experiments, Ansem the wise sent her away and handed her over to a man with a strange patch over one eye, probably Xigbar. Its connection to the Keyblades and the possible theory that this girl is actually Ava is given by the fact that, in the notes, it is specified several times how she often repeats the same phrase: "may your heart be your key guide".

So let's go back to the Lost Masters and their discussion, Luxu does not reveal, for now, his mission, but is about to tell it, stating that it is a very long story. Once again there is a cut on the box, a mysterious object about which nothing is really known. The only one who could know its content is Maleficent, but which at present has not yet become unbalanced. Here a great twist takes place, which lays important foundations on the narrative path that will take place in the future. It goes back in time, when Eraqus and Xehanort have just finished the famous game of chess. The first suddenly says there is a new game to play, to the astonishment of the second. Xehanort is even more curious to find out what's about to happen, given the presence of seven black pieces on the chessboard, contrary to the original thirteen. Each pawn has as its symbol that of the ancient masters, probably the six Old Masters plus the Master of Masters. We do not see who is deploying Eraqus, the only one we can recognize is Sora, since that pawn represented him from start to finish. The only thing we can recognize, knowing all the black pieces on the board and regardless of which other white pieces are, is who the new enemies will be.

Yozora

This is certainly the most difficult movie to decipher, but I'll try anyway. My mind, reviewing the video of Verum Rex several times in the world of Toy Story, began to formulate various theories, some even absurd. Let's go in order though, let's start from the basics: if Sora had actually disappeared from the radar, it is plausible that a sort of parallel world ended, even if what is around him looks like Shibuya (the city where the adventures of The Worlds Ends Whit You take place, another Nomura game whose characters have already appeared in Dream Drop Distance).

Parallel to this, however, another thing happens: Riku is also in a strange place, apparently the world of Verum Rex, atalthough shortly after it is noted with certainty that it is just Shinjuku. This theory is supported precisely by the fact that, shortly before the end of the video, there is the character of Yozora, very similar to Riku in appearance, but even more so to Noctis's version of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which observes the latter from a distance. If the timeline hypothesis is true, then no wonder this Yozora is in all respects Riku. The curiosity, however, is linked to the color of his eyes, one blue and one red. Riku's eye color is historically blue, but the explanation for that red eye could be complex and complex to understand. Riku's keyblade is the only one with another eye that searches, what if that eye was his own? Embedding the eye in his old keyblade could make events from the past provide explanations for future events. A dynamic similar to that implemented by the Master of Masters, but on the contrary.

It does not end there, since in the end reappears what is most likely the Master of Masters. At that moment this character is clearly in Shinjuku, almost as if, now, he is ready to create a Kingdom Hearts in the real world. This thesis could be supported by the fact that Young Xehanort says he has Sora that, by now, the latter is now done with their world, perhaps referring to the worlds of fairy tales. The one that continues to intrigue me are the other guys in the Verum Rex movie which, by design, vaguely recall only in certain respects some keyblade guards chosen by Ava as masters to re-found the factions, namely Lauriam, Skuld and Brain.

This is all I have assumed about the ending of Kingdom Hearts III, obviously we have no concrete information about the future, but the foundations for drawing up something new are all there. If you think differently or have developed your own idea, please let us know!
