This in fact starts from 100 years before Link's awakening, when the kingdom of Hyrule begins to be threatened by the Ganon calamity. Our heroes, led by a mysterious character from the future (or the past) will have to set out to recruit 4 champions, who could prove to be the only hope for the victory of the forces of good. Hyrule's fate is in their hands, but things may turn out differently from what we expect.

The technicality of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

After trying the full-bodied demo released on October 28th, we got our hands on the definitive version of the game and we can tell you right away that this second chapter of the saga of Hyrule Warriors is convincing us, and not a little. The late stages of the Age of Calamity are showing us a game with solid gameplay, fast and surprisingly technical compared to such standards. Let's start from the characters, the heart of this technicality, the demo had handed us the reins of the three main protagonists of the title, Link, Zelda and IMPA, ending right on the most beautiful, or just before being able to unlock the battles of the four champions. Today we can finally talk to you about Revali, Mipha, Urbosa and Daruk. The four hopes of Hyrule have shown themselves in all their beauty and skill, expanding the roster of playable characters and enriching the gameplay with new combos and skills, which will require all your skill to be fully mastered. Each of our heroes has strengths and weaknesses, children of the people who gave him birth, we pass from the balance of Link to the speed of Impa, while the pilots of the sacred giants are characterized by their innate abilities.

Enemies, especially bosses, will put the player's skills to the test. Everyone will in fact exploit different movesets and elemental powers, to which we will have to counter using the skills of our heroes and those of the wisely Sheikah tablet. As in Breath of the Wild, in fact, this incredible tool will come to our rescue with its fundamental features: the radio-controlled bombs, the Stasys, the Glacior and the Kalamitron. The aforementioned will prove fundamental during the clashes, it will be up to us to use them wisely based on the enemy in front of you, so that we can break down the shields that protect them, break their defenses and defeat them with spectacular finishing moves. It doesn't end there, because you show me there Calamity Ganon will deploy against us will also exploit the elemental powers of fire, ice and thunder, we will have to be good at countering them by exploiting their weaknesses to get the better of them. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity features a very diverse number of opponents, all typical of the series and to be faced with different approaches.

In command of the sacred giants

A very technical musou, we said. But only by choosing a challenging difficulty level. If they use the normal difficulty, the adventure can be faced without having to worry too much between light attacks and heavy attacks, from the difficult level up, the challenge that the game offers starts to get really interesting and challenging. Our skill will prove to be fundamental even when the title puts us at the helm of the sacred giants, a true peculiarity of the title that distinguishes it within the musou panorama, as well as proving to be a real pleasure for all fans of Breath of the Wild. The missions driving the giants are indeed very fun and they exploit the motion sensors of the Switch Joy-Con in a very intelligent way. Each will have a heavy physical attack in the area, and a light one at a distance, along with a bar that once reloaded will allow us to launch a super blow. At the helm of these giant guardians we will have to move from the beginning to the end of the map destroying entire armies, which will give a decidedly rewarding feeling of power.

The sacred giants are not the only element to give diversity of approach to the title. This new Hyrule Warriors, in fact, also delivers the possibility of being faced in two players through a local co-op mode based on the most classic of split-screens, which works net of a more compact shot, which unfortunately cuts some elements off the screen. Not a small fact, because in addition to doubling the hours of fun, it allows you to face individual missions with ever new approaches. In fact, we will be able to decide the strategy to face together with a friend, perhaps sending him in advance while we stop to free a single outpost, and then find ourselves again before the end-level boss area. The game, graphically, is a pleasure for the eyes. The cel-shaded graphics strongly refer to Breath of the Wild, so much so that in a static image we will find it difficult to distinguish the two titles: this of course until hundreds of enemies come in front of us, at which point we will remember that we are playing a musou. The work also works perfectly in portability, net of a more compact and nuanced graphics, and some popups still to be fixed, however by playing with the Switch out of the dock the title will gain in FPS.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Preview, at war to save HyruleIt is useless to go around it. The era of Calamity, despite some peculiar and interesting finds, promises to be a 100% Musou. If this has never been the genre for you, it's not easy for you to change your mind. However, our advice is definitely to keep an eye on it, if you are a fan of the Zelda saga, even if you don't like in Mousou, you must absolutely jump the obstacle and play it. Yes why Age of Calamity seems to be truly a game with a capital Ga and we can't wait to talk to you about it in more depth during our specific review.
