How to update iPhone without iTunes

For some time now, it has been possible to update iPhone without iTunes and without PC. You no longer need a computer to update your iPhone.

Each new version of iOS, the operating system the iPhone runs on, brings new features, bug fixes, and changes to what the phone can do and how it's used.

Updating to a new version of iOS involved connecting the iOS device to a PC, downloading the update to the computer, then installing the update by syncing with iTunes.

This is no longer the case. For some time now, it has been possible to update iPhone without iTunes and without PC using a technique known as over-the-air, or OTA, update.

Since the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad all run iOS, this tutorial applies to those devices as well.

How to update iPhone without iTunes

Before starting an update:

  • Back up your data to iCloud or iTunes in case something goes wrong with the update and your iPhone needs to be restored.
  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network. The update can also be downloaded from the cellular network, but the updates are large (often 1GB or more), the download may take a long time and use a lot of data. Wi-Fi is easier and faster.
  • Charge the iPhone battery. The download and installation process takes time. If the remaining battery life is less than 50%, please charge the battery before updating.

How to update iOS without iTunes and without PC

1. On the iPhone Home screen, tap the Settings app.

2. Scroll down, then tap General.

3. Tap Software Update. The device checks for an update. If there is, report what it is and what the update adds to the device.

4. Tap Download and Install to start installing the software update on the iPhone.

5. If your phone is protected by a passcode, enter the passcode to start the download. A blue progress bar will begin to move across the screen.

6. Tap Install Now. The screen goes dark, then it will show you the Apple logo. A progress bar shows the status of the update. When the iOS update is complete, the iPhone restarts and displays the notice that your iPhone update is complete.

Tips for updating your device wirelessly

The iPhone notifies you when there is an update even if you don't check it. If you see a red icon in the Settings app on your home screen, it means an iOS update is available. You may also receive a push notification.

If there isn't enough empty storage space on your device to install the update, learn how to free up space on your iPhone.

If something goes wrong with the installation, there are two options to fix the problem: recovery mode or (if things go wrong) DFU mode.
