The easiest way to switch Apple phones. Got a new iPhone? You probably also have data like photos, music, videos, contacts, calendars, payment methods, smart home settings, and health information to move. This article explains how to transfer all your data from one iPhone to another iPhone. These instructions apply to devices running iOS 10.3 and later.

How to transfer photos, music, videos and data from iPhone to another with iTunes

If you have a Mac or Windows computer with iTunes installed, you can back up your old iPhone data and then transfer it to your new phone. These instructions for transferring data to the new iPhone apply to iTunes 10 and later.

    1. Connect your old phone to the computer and open iTunes.
    2. Select the device icon in the upper left corner of the window.
    3. Select Back up now to save a backup of your phone to your computer.
    4. Alternatively, you can select Sync to create a backup and update your phone with any changes made to your music library, TV shows or other items managed by iTunes.
    5. Once iTunes is done, unplug your old phone.
    6. Connect your new phone to the computer.
    7. What you do next depends on whether you have set up the new device or not. If you haven't, the process begins. When the startup asks if you want to set up your iPhone as a new device, select Restore from iTunes backup.
    8. If you've already done the initial setup for your new phone, select the device icon in iTunes, then select Restore iPhone.
    9. iTunes will delete your new iPhone during this process. You will lose everything you added when you first set it up.
    10. On the confirmation screen that appears, select Reset.

iTunes will delete the current contents of your new phone and replace it with the backup of your old device.

How to use iCloud to transfer data to new iPhone

The iPhone also allows you to back up your data to iCloud, Apple's cloud storage platform. After backing up your old phone, you can restore the new one with that data without connecting either of them to a computer.

    1. On your old phone, open Settings.
    2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
    3. Tap iCloud.
    4. Tap iCloud Backup.
    5. If the switch next to iCloud Backup isn't on, tap it to turn it on. It should turn green.
    6. Tap Back up now.
    7. Your iPhone will save the iCloud backup.

When setting up your new phone, tap Restore from iCloud Backup to transfer photos, music, videos and data from iPhone to iPhone.

    How to switch between iPhones

The third method of setting up a new iPhone with data from an old one, which Apple calls Get Started, is only available the first time you activate the new device. While the iTunes procedure basically allows you to move data whenever you want, this process has a smaller usage window.

If you miss it, you can reset your new iPhone and do the initial setup again, but at that point one of the other methods may be easier. Here's how to transfer data between iPhones wirelessly. These instructions apply to devices running iOS 12.4 and later.

    1. Plug both phones into the power outlet.
    2. Turn on your new device to start the setup process. Place the old device next to it.
    3. Your new phone will show the Apple ID on the old phone and ask you if that's the one you want to use on the new one. Tap Continue to confirm.
    4. An animation will appear on your new phone. Put it in your old device's camera viewfinder to continue.
    5. You can also tap Authenticate manually if the camera is not available.
    6. On your new phone, enter your current passcode.
    7. Set up Touch ID or Face ID (depending on which iPhone model you own) or tap Set Up Later.
    8. Face ID is available on iPhone X and later.
    9. The next screen will ask you how you want to transfer the data to your new phone. Tap Transfer from iPhone.
    10. Your data will be transferred from the old iPhone to the new iPhone.
