Hate in video games costs you: the controversial Fortnite case

The moment of accusation towards video games is simply periodic, when a misinformation report or a misunderstanding lead the population to accuse an ultimately innocent industry. By bringing the water to their mill, the media do not think they have to produce accurate content, which can report the reality of the events that occurred and to leave to the public the arduous sentence, as all this would lead to an inevitable stance of the videogame industry. What happens, however, when it is an episode in a video game that unleashes the masses?

There is no need to ask, because it is right in front of our eyes, reluctantly. A video from about two years ago has in fact been at the center of attention in recent days, unfortunately for what concerns an unfortunate event that occurred during a session of Fortnite: Save the World, a title that for one reason or another is always on everyone's lips. The mode of the famous title of epic Games has very different game mechanics compared to the classic Fortnite battle royale mode, which caused an episode that is difficult to forget.

So much is the fault of video games

During an in-game session, a child intent on playing the aforementioned Fortnite mode was "cheated" by an older user. The event concerns the classic maneuvers aimed at stealing objects from other players, which were much more widespread at the dawn of this mode. As you can see in the video, the boy categorically refused to return the items to the child, presenting himself with a haughty and unjustified air that led the youngest to burst into tears. Although it is "only" a video game, it is clear that such an affront to a young boy is somewhat questionable, even if less than what happened later.

In fact, the child's mother promptly decided to comfort her child and repair the incident, thus setting a good example and demonstrating how to behave in such situations. All this was possible because the woman, as it should be, followed her son during the game sections, and therefore realized what happened in the disastrous situation ... or maybe not. To resolve the matter in fact, the woman preferred to rail against the other player, who showed further snootiness and again refused to return what was obtained. Given the situation, Mom has seen fit of personally offend the boy and his neighbors, demonstrating to his son everything that (not) should be done in situations like these, and trying to solve the problem with insults.

It is clear that such a situation inevitably leads to a loss of nerves, but what happened is the most wrong representation of how to behave in such circumstances. In the race for incivility, however, the mother and the older boy can safely compete for the top positions, but it is clear that the other participants are not actually competing. Does it really make sense to blame a child for his (very natural) naivety given by his tender age? Also considering that it has not been accompanied in its sections it is obvious that this is not the case, but it makes even less sense to accuse Fortnite and Epic Games for what happened.

It is convenient to avoid all the blame and label the monster on video games, avoid the scandals deriving from the bad behavior of people to imagine that everything comes from a software. Interfacing with the community is both wonderful and dangerous at the same time, because it is clear that it is possible to create friendships at a distance, such as meeting bad guys and unsavory people. To avoid such episodes in the family, it is enough take your own parenting responsibilities, and don't let a child collide with the harsh reality of virtual society, simply accompanying them on this path full of potential fun.

Take your responsibilities

It is not video games that cause unfortunate facts of the genre, but a series of carelessness and shortcomings regarding parental authority, in this case. It makes no sense to blame Fortnite for what happened, and more generally the video game medium for similar events that occurred in the past. Define the event Cyberbullying, then, it is simply ridiculous and completely out of context as far as this macabre term is concerned. But it is clear that to obscure such problems it is easier to point every comma towards software, works of art designed to entertain and make consumers happy, certainly not suited to create episodes like this.
