About a month ago Showtime secured the TV series inspired by the sci-fi video game series HALO, ordering a first season from 10 episodes. The Amblin TV he is now handling the production together with the creator of Awake, Kyle Killen, and to the director Rupert Wyatt (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). Killen will be the showrunner and Wyatt will direct some episodes.
Some new details have surfaced, which fans may be happy to hear. The series will in fact tell a completely new story, which will not be based on any of the video games released so far. It seems we will be transported into the 26th century, in the midst of a conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as Covenant ('The deal'). In all of this, Master Chief (or John-117) will have a starring role.
In a recent interview, Showtime's president of programming Gary Levin said:
All I can say is: Master Chief is a main character. It's going to be a new story, but we're going to be incredibly fee-conscious and we're working with the guys at Microsoft 343 to make sure we're not infringing anything. We made a conscious decision to hire a writer who's not known for science fiction or big battle movies because these aspects are already present in the HALO franchise and we will take them into account, but we also wanted to make sure we could delve under the Spartan armor all the way to the aspects. more humanly dramatic, so it felt like Showtime territory. We hope it will appeal to both HALO fans and fans of the Showtime drama series.
Showtime CEO, David Nevins, instead stated that the series will be rooted more in the sci-fi genre than in fantasy:
I've read some scripts, I think it's a very different genre, it's futuristic science fiction set in space, it won't be fantasy. In my opinion in the history of television there is only one iconic saga that falls into this category, Star Trek. Arguably, 10 or 12 of the 20 best films of all time belong to the futuristic science fiction genre.
David Nevins also praised Battlestar Galactica, saying that it is among the models that inspire it HALO. An important budget is expected for the episodes, but it is also very likely that we will have to wait until at least 2020 before seeing anything concrete.
