Gods Will Fall - Review, a decidedly atypical roguelike

The topos of the man's vengeance against an unjust God, with the consequent journey undertaken to break down the yoke of an apparently immortal and invincible pantheon, is repeated cyclically in the videogame world. How many times have we led fearless heroes in battle against evil gods, gradually acquiring legendary powers and superhuman strength, leading humanity to victory? Here, in Gods will fall forget all this. The title developed by Clever beans is an action RPG with isometric view, characterized by a style dark fantasy and set in a dystopian Celtic universe, which will put us at the helm of an unfortunate group of warriors who survived a shipwreck on the island of the gods.

Gods Will Fall - Review, a decidedly atypical roguelike

The task of this handful of soldiers under our command will be to bring down the gods one after another but, as we shall see, victory will most of the time be a chimera, and we will find ourselves losing our comrades several times before obtaining the coveted deicide. An obscure title, permeated byexperience that comes from failure, but which will lead those who do not give up to enormous satisfaction. A title that apparently refers to sagas like that of Diablo, but which instead winks at the most recent roguelike, shuffling the cards on the table to create an adventure totally new from the point of view of the approach and gameplay. A game that is easy to understand, but difficult to master, which will require great skill but even more luck so that you can finally bring down all the deities.

Gods Will Fall is a decidedly anomalous roguelike

The peculiarity of Gods Will Fall hits us straight in the stomach as soon as we take control of the main character, or rather, of the characters. Yes, because as soon as we wake up on the shores of the kingdom of the Gods, the last survivors of the gigantic Celtic army launched to bring down the evil tyrants, we will find ourselves in simultaneously move the 7 champions left to humanity. Our goal will be to face the 12 dungeons present to defeat their inhabitants and thus restore peace; and that's where the fun comes. Although in fact it is not really a roguelike, Gods Will Fall recalls its spirit, as it will allow us to choose which champion to face the level with, and in case we perish during the quest, it will be up to our successor to take our place, beat the divinity, and thus recover the lost companion.

Gods Will Fall, from this point of view, allows a wide replay value. The dungeons to face are not numerous, but they will look different with each new game, as will our roster of champions. Each of them, in fact, will have special skills, as well as a default default equipment. In addition to always various playable characters, too the map can be faced with different approaches to each new game. From the very beginning of the game, in fact, we will be free to choose which dungeon to start from. Be careful, however, since not everyone will have the same difficulty and it will be up to us to figure out which is the right order in which to face them in the current game. An order that we will have to choose based on the skills and weapons obtained by our heroes, but also by their background. A Valor warrior, in fact, could be tormented in dreams by the god Krannus, thus seeing his stats decreased as he faces his dungeon. It will therefore be better for us to choose another fighter who perhaps, instead, will have a strength increased by +1 precisely because he is angry against that god.

Difficulty and replay value

If we were to describe Gods Will Fall in two words, it would be difficulty and replayability. The latter, as we have seen, is in fact a fundamental component of the title. With each new game we will have different heroes, with new skills and stories, as well as further possibilities to approach a map that confronts us with different dungeons to be faced each time in a different order. For each deity defeated, we will get new weapons to distribute to the team, while our champions will gain various skills, and will be able to take the loot collected in the dungeon with them.

However, winning will not be that simple. The game's dungeons are really tough, and approaching one without being properly ready means losing a hero. Once you enter the level, in fact, it will no longer be possible for us to abandon it, unless we choose to leave our sample inside. Many times it has happened to us, during the test, to wander around the island with only two or three heroes, while the others had fallen and / or trapped in the various levels (you can easily monitor the location of your missing friends from the map ), with the risk of losing the game. Not only, each boss will be structurally linked to the enemies scattered around the dungeon. At the top of the screen, in fact, we will be able to constantly keep an eye on the energy bar of the god in question, which it will lower as we eliminate the enemies in the game area: thoroughly exploring the entire dungeon map and eliminating any monstrosities that we encounter on our way will allow us to reach the final boss with much more chances of victory.

The gods will fall, but only after we too have fallen

From a technical point of view, Gods Will Fall defends itself well, revealing itself to be a classic Diablo-style Action RPG with an isometric view that will make us face dozens and dozens of enemies at thewhite weapon, with axes, swords, spears and clubs typical of the Celtic world, and with some skills and objects (assigned to the directional keys), which will allow us to vary our fighting style. We will then be able to collect and throw the fallen weapons at the enemies, which however will be destroyed by wear after a certain number of uses. To recover our energy, however, we will be able to acquire vigor by chaining long combos, so as to launch a powerful battle cry that will give us a momentary power-up filling our life bar.

Gods Will Fall - Review, a decidedly atypical roguelike

Graphically, Gods Will Fall presents itself with an artistic style reminiscent of cel-shading with watercolor strokes, very pleasing to the eye, as will be the designs of the monsters and the gods themselves. Each level will stand out from the previous one, as well as the bosses, who have a fair variety of move-sets and arenas in which we should face them. A title with a decent longevity, to be resumed from time to time to face a new run. Ultimately, we would like to promote Gods Will Fall, which tries to innovate the classic formula of the action RPG by mixing it with that of the roguelike, but through a decidedly innovative point of view.
