God of War: the heavy legacy of the past

God of War: the heavy legacy of the past

God of War is definitely the title of the moment, its release date is now approaching and, slowly, more and more information is released. The game is Sony's spearhead as far as its 2018 line-up is concerned, and to pass the wait, I will tell you about those elements that, historically, are present in the saga and that should be preserved in this chapter as well. If you want to know more about the product we refer you to our hands-on waiting for the review, if instead you want to take away some curiosity about the series here is the special where we talk about the 10 most beautiful boss fights.

God of War: the heavy legacy of the past

The crudeness of the scenes

We all still have it in the eye when Kratos took off Apollo's head with his hands, or when he crushed Poseidon's eyes. The list could go on forever but the result doesn't change: God of War is renowned for its disproportionate violence. We therefore hope to witness scenes that are out of the ordinary, that shock with their visual impact and that cause goosebumps just to remember them. The videogame must absolutely not lose its soul, which, however, the Game Director said it will remain intact, despite the general revolution of the product.

Clashes with the gods

Although it is almost obvious the killing of some god inside God of War, until now Santa Monica has shown nothing to that effect. We have seen huge creatures such as the Serpent that surrounds the world, or a small hint of the wolf Fenrir, born from the cross between Loki and the giantess Angrboða. Gods in human form, however, no trace, there are theories dedicated to the son of Kratos, or Atreus, who see the young boy as a sort of reincarnation of Thor, but on this we have neither elements that confirm this thesis, nor clues released by the software house.

The Blades of Chaos

This is definitely the symbolic weapon of everything God of War. Although the developers wanted to give new life to the game starting from Kratos' equipment, these blades represent a strong image for the brand. Abandoning them would be like turning your back on the past, certainly towards a different future, just as this title is different from the previous ones. Despite everything, seeing them again would be a pleasant surprise, also because old habits are always the hardest to die.

Additional weapons

We know very well that in God of War both Kratos and Atreus will have equipment sets that will modify their stats. The series has also stood out in recent years for the fact that the Ghost of Sparta, in addition to the Blades of Chaos, progressing in the adventure he obtained more and more powerful weapons that gave variations to the normal gameplay. In this new chapter, nothing of the above has yet been shown, so for what we know Kratos will only have the ax, the shield and his fearsome fists. We obviously hope for some nice unexpected surprise.

Athena

Surely with Athena there are some unfinished business. The enigmatic ending of God of War III leaves room for any kind of speculation, and even the goddess of wisdom surely has pebbles in her shoe to take off against Kratos. The return of this divinity would open a succession of really interesting events, also suggesting that the new chapter of the saga is not the opening of an unprecedented cycle, but inevitably connects to what happened in Greece.

Epic boss fights

The story of God of War is surrounded by epic boss fights. Passing from Poseidon alle Parche, from Hercules to the Colossus of Rhodes. Changes of shots, situations always on the verge of almost touching tragedy. Unfortunately in this episode of the saga we will not have the classic QTEs that many lovers have appreciated over the years, but the spectacularity of these battles would be obligatory to repeat it despite the surprising change of gameplay.

Twists

The saga of God of War historically it has never had really striking twists due to a rather linear narrative reduced almost to the bone, except for a few small insights dedicated to Kratos' troubled past. Despite this, however, there were truly surprising moments such as, for example, Pandora's useless sacrifice in God of War III, or just the end of the latter. However, given the change of direction of the production, now we inevitably expect something more, also due to the importance that Santa Monica has given to the scenic times in the various films shown. The dialogues seem much deeper than in the past, the Ghost of Sparta this time will also have to look after his son, educate him and much more. The potential to dissect the many facets of the protagonist are all there, we hope that in the end the expectations will not be disappointed.

This was all we expect the new God of War to inherit from the previous chapters of the saga. We hope that some of these elements will be taken from the title, also to avoid straying the game too far from the cornerstones that have made it so famous. If you have other ideas let us know in the comments, in the meantime, however, keep following us so as not to miss any news.
