God Of War: from father to son - The origins of the saga

Kratos is undoubtedly one of the most beloved protagonists among those of the series that appeared exclusively on the PlayStation console. The charisma, the fury and the glory of the God of War they have placed him (it should be said) in the Olympus of the characters that really matter, now and forever.

Looking forward to the return of Kratos with the new chapter of the series God of War, which represents a courageous reboot of the action saga developed by the studio Santa Monica, it is important to do some historical revisionism, revealing to all our readers the origins of a hero who is not only one of the symbols of the modern video game, but an icon whose charisma has conquered true immortality over the centuries. .

God Of War: from father to son - The origins of the saga

God of War - 2005

In the service of the gods of Olympus, Kratos is entrusted with a rather delicate mission: kill Ares, god of war. To do this, it will be necessary to get your hands on an extraordinary power capable of killing a deity, enclosed in Pandora's box, and kept in an immense temple located on the shoulders of Cronus, huge Titan and father of Zeus. Thus began one of the most important action games of the 128-bit era of PlayStation 2, thanks to the frenzy, violence and above all the adrenaline that the game was able to offer, between boss fights against gigantic giants at moments marked by QTE heart-pounding. A game that, like it or not, marked an era.

God of War II - 2007

Two years after the original game's release, Kratos was ready to return to the scene with the official sequel to the first chapter, designed to correct - and expand - the good things put in place at the debut. Kratos begins to consider the behavior of the gods unacceptable and once in Rhodes, besieged by the Spartans, he decides to unleash all his wrath. Zeus, annoyed by the demi-god's behavior, decides that the time has come to take matters into his own hands. God of War II is the classic example of more of the same, where everything is magnified to maximum power: increasingly frequent (and colossal) bosses, a frenetic direction and very few moments of tiredness for the duration of the adventure. Perhaps, a step below the progenitor but equally worthy of attention, especially at the time.

God of War: Chains of Olympus - 2008

Those were the years of PlayStation Portable (or PSP) and Sony did not forget to give the owners of the pocket console a new and exclusive chapter of the adventures of Kratos. Chains of Olympus narrates events prior to the first chapter on PS2, in which Kratos puts himself at the service of the powerful gods leaving for Attica to fight the Persian army, determined to conquer Greece. Developed by Ready at Dawn, the game is remembered perhaps as the slowest and least interesting chapter of the entire GOW saga, although from a technical point of view it is a small miracle (especially considering the hardware it originally ran on).

God of War III - 2010

With the advent of the PlayStation 3, it was time for Kratos to demonstrate the full power of the then overwhelming Sony platform, for a third installment. Kratos' adventure starts from Mount Olympus, a mountain to climb while i Titans they try in every way to block it. The breath of the story immediately takes an unexpected turn and it is from that moment that the player understands that he is in front of the Most majestic God of War ever, perhaps the best also in terms of boss fights, even more epic than previously thanks to the power of PS3. The closure of the trilogy, of the mortal who became a god sacrificed himself for the good of all humanity, would not in any case have represented the end of a hero whose myth goes far beyond that of a simple harpy tiller.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta - 2010

A final epitaph for the classic series came in November 2010, the month in which it saw the light Ghost of sparta, re-developed by Ready at Dawn Studios for PlayStation Portable. The second pocket episode is a prequel, through the events that took place between the first and second God of War, just after the defeat of Ares. Much more solid and well packaged than Chain of Olympus, this second chapter for PSP outclassed it in terms of graphics, control system and narration, establishing itself as the maximum point of action games on the small - so to speak - Sony portable platform.

God of War: Ascension - 2013

It does not end here: 2013 is the year Kratos returns to the PS3 scene with Ascension, absolute prequel to the series (the story takes place before Chains of Olympus). Despite having all the gears in place, the mechanism set up by the Santa Monica lacked a certain general appeal. It must have been that deep feeling of déjà vu regarding events, situations and bosses to be defeated, the fact is that the last appearance of Kratos before the much desired rebirth is a game that lacks the courage to dare and, above all, to surprise. After that, several years will pass (five, to be exact) before seeing Kratos again on the field, this time accompanied by his son. Atreus and no longer thirsty for revenge, but eager to gain the peace that has long been denied him. The rest is history.
