Gemini Man - Review of the new Ang Lee movie

Gemini Man is a sci-fi action movie starring a man who's chewed up sci-fi in his career, after all Will Smith he is certainly not a first-rate actor. Behind the cameras we find a master of technicality, Ang Lee, Taiwanese director who after having thrilled us with Life of Pi this time it will take us to a world that is more current and certainly closer to our daily life. Will Smith plays Henry Brogen, an omega-level sniper, probably the first in the world in his work, which has long been offering its services to the American state.

But close to retirement, Henry Brogen finds himself embroiled in a plot bigger than he thought and in fact, just after eliminating his latest target, the man discovers that in reality the state had lied to him about the nature of the target itself, peddling a chemist for a bioterrorist. Henry therefore decides to see clearly and begins to investigate the facts, assisted by a neophyte in the field of espionage, Danny (Mary elizabeth winstead), and by an old war veteran, Baron (Benedict Wong).

Take advantage of new technologies

Without going to affect surprises or anything else, after all from the trailer it is clear that the protagonist will find himself in front of an enemy that is not easy to deal with, that is, a young self driven by an insatiable desire to defeat his target as quickly as possible. Here the film succeeds divinely: the Motion Capture system used to reproduce the face of a young Will Smith on the set is truly avant-garde, to the point that the eye fails to notice that it is a virtual reproduction.

Another point in favor of the film are the cameras, with choices made with no expense spared, squeezing the most modern technology to offer a product that in 3D + HFR (system that places each frame in high definition), is truly record-breaking and you will hardly find around a fluidity of movement so well detailed, to the point that you will feel like you are watching the action from a giant window and not through the cinema screen. 3D is crazy, with fragments of objects flying all over the screen to end up next to your face and on more than one occasion you will want to dodge a few shots yourself, so much is the action around you.

Gemini Man - Review of the new Ang Lee movie

Where did I fail?

Well after a soundtrack well thought out and suitable for the scenes, after a decent introspection of the protagonist who is generally almost left to chance in similar films, after the excellent performances of Will Smith and his companions, where did the film go wrong? In directing, you might say: well no! Not even in the direction you can find errors; the mistake, if we can define it that way, is precisely in the general plot, in having wanted to put a lot of effort into researching the latest generation equipment for a film that did not need it, except in Motion Capture which for obvious reasons had to be used. The general feeling while watching Gemini Man is already seen, already experienced in some way. Another flaw is undoubtedly the choice of the main actor: without wanting to take anything away from the talented Will Smith, perhaps it would have been more realistic to include an actor not so advanced in age and career, maybe around thirty-five or forty would have been better. , while here the effect that is generated is that of seeing a grandfather who takes it out on his grandson. The film is not convincing at all for its substance that although from a technical point of view it is unassailable, from the point of view of usability it is dull and tasteless.
