Gboard not working? 4 solutions

The first thing I recommend to always do when you are faced with a problem with a device is to restart, in this case restart your Android phone and see if by doing so you have solved the problems, if Gboard still does not work continue reading the solutions below.

Force stop Gboard app

Gboard can get stuck on the screen. In this case, forcing the app to stop (not quit) could solve the problem. This will essentially eliminate all operational and temporary keyboard configurations and reset itself when we reopen the application.

  1. On your device, open Settings.
  2. Now find and tap App (or Application Management).
  3. Then find and tap Gboard.
  4. Open Gboard in the apps
  5. Now touch Force stop and then confirm to force shutdown by tapping OK.
  6. Force stop the Gboard app
  7. Now open any app where you need to use a keyboard and check if Gboard is working properly.

Disable and re-enable Gboard from the keyboard settings

In Android, keyboards are managed in Language and Input. Disabling Gboard and re-enabling it may fix the problem if there are issues with the preferences.

  1. Open the settings of your device.
  2. Find and tap Language and input (can be in Other Settings).
  3. Now touch Virtual keyboard (you may see Current Keyboard option depending on model).
  4. Now disable Gboard and then turn it back on.
  5. Now check if Gboard is working properly.

If Gboard still doesn't work, open the Virtual Keyboard setting again. Now disable all keyboards, then re-enable Gboard and check if it works properly.

Make sure Gboard is set as the default keyboard

Gboard must be the default keyboard to function correctly. Setting Gboard as the default keyboard might solve the problems.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device and tap "General" or "General Management".
  2. Select "Language and input", then "Default keyboard".
  3. In the popup that opens, select Gboard.

Clear the Gboard cache

Clearing the Gboard cache can remove data or files that may be causing problems with the functioning of the app. Try clearing the cache and data from Gboard and see if the problem persists.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap "Storage".
  2. Select "Internal Memory".
  3. Tap "Cached data".
  4. You will be asked if you want to clear the cache for all your apps: press “OK”.

Make sure both Gboard and your Android device are up to date

Check that your device or the Gboard app has no pending updates. In this case, installing those updates could fix any potential bugs in the Gboard code.

To update Gboard:

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap the three lines in the top left corner, then select "My apps and games".
  2. In the "Updates" tab, you will see a list of all your apps waiting to be updated. Tap "Update" next to Gboard if it's in the list. If not, it has already been updated.

To update your Android device:

  1. Open the Settings app and select "System".
  2. In bottom of the System menu, tap “System Update”.
  3. On the next page, you will be told if your Android has an update pending.

Uninstall Gboard and reinstall it

If Gboard still crashes or doesn't work, try uninstalling the app. Once Gboard is reinstalled, it is likely to be back to normal. To do this:

  1. Open your device's Settings, then tap "Apps".
  2. Scroll through the list until you find Gboard, then tap it.
  3. Tap "Uninstall". When asked to confirm, tap "OK".

You can then reinstall Gboard via the Google Play Store. You may need to set it as the default keyboard again after performing this procedure.
