Final Fantasy 7: why remake (and what the next one could be called)

Ok it is established: Final Fantasy 7 Remake seems to have gone wrong to many for its twisted, sometimes hasty and not so structured ending. Despite an almost maniacal fidelity in the first 17 chapters, the choices made by the team - which we remember being the same as the original - did not please many fans, while people who had not played the original found many things not well explained. . Obviously it is said that everything makes sense in the mind of those who think it, and this is probably also decilnable by the development team of this game.

Let's go then, with the due spoiler (if you have not finished the game do not continue), to try to understand in the first place why this word Remake, but above all what it could mean for the future of the series. If, on the other hand, you are interested in discovering the differences from the original and our theories on the ending, we invite you to read our specials.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The term, taken from the Cambridge Dictionary, it means “to make a new film that has a story and title similar to an old one”. Obviously this explanation has declined on films: we have already seen in the past, especially in the world of cinema, how a remake is an interpretation of the concepts of the original moved from the perspective of belonging to the new staff. Welcome to the North, a French film, becomes with us Welcome to the South, and changes some dynamics by shifting them to our geopolitical conformation. Over time we have also seen films like Point Break reborn under new life with remakes that changed the story a lot, leaving only the concept solid. To conclude the package we also find films like Baywatch, not definable but which play a lot on the limit between remake and sequel, and Star Trek, which instead is a real reboot.

On video games this is much more marked: Remastered means taking a game and proposing it the same but adapted, remake it means taking a title and transposing it with modern dynamics (without upsetting it), reboot means taking a series and restarting it (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare). Without starting to talk about the gradation of grays that mix between the words reboot and remake, let's instead analyze the way in which remakes are managed in the video game world.

Over the past few years we have seen many remakes of high value: Resident Evil 2 and 3, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Trials of Mana: as we can see, these games have certainly changed the graphics, some even the gameplay and the story, adapting to the years decidedly different from those of belonging. Among all, however, there is one thing in common: the total absence of the word Remake. If we take this and combine it with the fact that, in the Japanese production philosophy, juxtaposing names of any kind with the title always means something (Persona 5 Royal, Nier Reincarnation, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistene), then the word Remake next to Final Fantasy 7 starts to sound weird.

Remake

The word Remake comes from the term make (to do) and the prefix re, which together define the word redo. If we then take the concept of the term itself, let's see how this word could mean something deeper than the simple kind of game. If we take this theory as true, then we are faced with a Final Fantasy VII that has the task of redoing. Thing? Obviously the story of the game.

As we see in the end of the title, in fact, the heroes venture to beaches never visited (not even in the original) with the desire to rewrite history, to do it again. They want to avoid what we see in Advent Children, and they want to do it in the best possible way, at the risk of changing themselves. So what if that remake, which almost no game places next to the name even when it is obvious that it is, meant something similar?

Obviously it wouldn't heal the wounds of the discontented, but at least it would contextualize what it meant for Nomura and everyone else to play this game. Kitase himself, Executive Producer of the game, stated that there was never any desire to make a 1: 1 copy, but rather to adapt it to this new era, of do it again for the new generations.

In short, obviously we are in the field of theories, but if we were right, Final Fantasy VII Remake is not a remake, in effect, but not even a reboot, spin-off or remastered: it would be a "What If?", a title that starts from a concept identical to the original but which, with a very meta-referential trick, places unknown paths for new shores (which could be very different or identical to the original, a sort of Schrodinger's Final Fantasy since until then it's both at the same time).

Final Fantasy 7 King? (Restore, Rewrite, etc)

So what awaits us in the future? We don't know, but we're pretty sure we won't have a Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. If we take as true the fact that Remake is not significant for the genre of translation but is specific to the title, then we could have a Final Fantasy VII Re-Something, a new subtitle that no longer highlights the desire to redo (which, in fact, now they can do), but wanting to rewrite history, change the world.

In short, we expect a Final Fantasy that could open up new paths, perhaps not very different from the originals but just enough to leave us stunned. Or he might have made fun of us all and in the next episode we will have the same plot, in the face of the detractors. Or maybe Mass Effect will teach the title how to have various paths to go, making both the old purists happy (doing the same actions would lead to the same consequences as the original) and the new entries (making different ones will change the plot, perhaps causing Tifa to die instead of Aerith or seeing Cloud pass over to Sephiroth's side).

And you, what do you think? What will be the title of the next Final Fantasy VII? But above all, how would you like it? Write it to us in the comments.
