Doom: unpublished images from the canceled fourth chapter of the series

For the past four years, Doom is literally reborn after a long period of oblivion during which the series has had more news. After a break of twelve years, Id Software, Together with Bethesda Softworks, restored Doom to its former glory in an extraordinary way. Not everyone will know, however, that before the arrival of the Doom reboot a fourth main episode which was eventually discarded. Doom 3 was the last game in the series to be released before Doom underwent a full reboot in 2016. The third installment of the series came out way back 2004 and featured much stronger horror and sci-fi elements in addition to the action-based gameplay that Doom was previously known for.

This third installment, not much appreciated by the most avid fans of the series, was supposed to have a direct sequel of which some preliminary game segments and artwork have recently emerged. The video showing this unpublished material was published by Crispies su YouTube. From the video in question we see how the unborn Doom 4 share many elements with the latest games. The enemy and weapon designs are very reminiscent of those used in recent reboots, especially urban areas which are extremely similar to those that appear in the recent Doom Eternal. However, there are some strong differences both with the previous chapters and with the more recent ones. The first enemy shown in the video, the one wearing a sweatshirt, practically resembles none of the enemies featured in the various episodes.

Although the 2004 chapter has not been welcomed compared to other Doom titles, it has attempted to renew the series of belonging on a thematic level, with a more marked narrative component and a much more important science fiction component. A perhaps too radical change that convinced producers and developers not to continue down that path.
