Did Ray Tracing already exist at the time of PlayStation 2?

One of the most talked about technologies of recent times is that of Ray Tracing, an optical geometry technique that allows light to calculate and follow a path through the interaction with the various surfaces, a technology very much appreciated by users that makes the quality of lighting really better than in the past.

Although we speak of "new technology", the term is partly incorrect as, in the video that we propose at the head of the article dating back to 2008, it is possible to see a PlayStation 2 tech demo with the support of the Ray Tracing. For the realization, only 16 KB of memory of the PlayStation 2 Vector Unit was used, which renders polygons with advanced effects. A test carried out by some internal studies of CESG (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) but which unfortunately have not found space in practical use mainly due to the not yet sufficiently advanced technology.

Thanks to the video, we become aware of how a new technology, "placed" on the market recently and not yet exploited by everyone, is actually the result of works that have been perpetuating for more than ten years by the various companies.
