Through its official website, the American publisher Devolver Digital announced today that it has acquired the Croatian development studio Croteam, responsible for video games such as the series Serious Sam e The Talos Principle. Devolver defines "an extremely exciting future" what, from now, lies ahead for the two companies, thanks to this new acquisition. "Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we have decided to go ahead and get married," reads the release.

Almost thirty years ago, a group of childhood friends got together to start Croteam inside a small garage in Zagreb. The fledgling studio was built around creative experimentation, pushing technical boundaries and a mutual trust that would last decades. The team dabbled in football matches before putting together a dazzling tech demo that would eventually become Serious Sam and change the path of the studio forever. But it was a struggle to launch the Serious Sam demo with a publisher and only one label - Gathering of Developers - showed interest and support. That support blossomed into friendship and respect that would eventually reconnect Croteam with some of the Gathering of Developers team when they later helped found Devolver Digital.
A decade ago Devolver Digital was just starting out and was looking for its first project to collaborate on in the emerging world of digital distribution. Similarly, Croteam was looking for a partner they could trust to help them bring their beloved franchise back to the fore with the upcoming Serious Sam 3. And so, Serious Sam's next big game has brought together old partners and forged a decade of friendship and dedication.
Since then Croteam and Devolver Digital have collaborated on dozens of games, from the fast-paced Serious Sam series to the award-winning The Talos Principle on PC, console, VR and mobile platforms. Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we decided to go ahead and get married.
Devolver has acquired Croteam… or maybe Croteam has acquired Devolver… What is certain is that our future together is extremely exciting with new projects like The Talos Principle 2, other Serious Sam games and original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios. Croteam will obviously retain total creative freedom and Devolver Digital will continue to make silly recommendations that Croteam simply ignores - we prefer it that way.
