Destiny 2 Preview

Awaited for months and desired by all the most avid gamers, the Beta di Destiny 2, title of Bungie which continues the events we experienced in the first Destiny. After the full-bodied official reveal of the title, which showed us a hint of the plot, the gameplay and filled us with details on what awaits us, there was a lot of additional information leaked on the net and also accompanied by various videos. It has been known for some time that this test version of the game would give us the opportunity to play the first mission in history (Homecoming), access the assault "La Inverted Spiral and use the social area called "Rifugio". Obviously there was also a way to test the modes dedicated to pvp in the crucible, which are Control e Detonation. How was our test? What are the substantial differences and improvements from the lucky predecessor? Let's proceed step by step.

Destiny 2 Preview

The biggest premise to make, and definitely a duty, concerns the more or less big gaffe that Bungie was the protagonist of during the period Early Access area of Destiny 2 Beta: hundreds and hundreds of users in fact could not play at their best (or not play at all) due to continuous errors of various kinds that led to sudden crashes, or even to the non-spawn of enemies and allies (and consequent rejection). With most of these fixed, we also learned that some of them were linked to NAT, a burden that Destiny has been carrying on their shoulders since year 1 of the first chapter. For information, if you can set up your connection on the NAT type 1, you will no longer have any problems.

"Welcome to a world without light"

Our adventure in Destiny 2, after the choice of the class, will begin as we had already been shown during the reveal of the title, with a majestic video that portrays the Cabal attack on the Watchtower. But what finally made us smile and that four-fifths of the predecessor missed terribly is the marked personality of our allies, with whom we will finally be able to interact even during the mission (and not just watch them as they laze around a table). During the attack we will learn that the invading Cabals are none other than there Red Legion, one of the elite squadrons of their race. This opening mission was therefore the first test, where you can taste the new subclasses of the three possible characters and more. Therefore, the Lama Dell'Alba for the Sorcerer, the Sentinel for the Titan, and the Blaster for the Hunter parade on the catwalk. To be changed is also the real skill layering, which will be selectable to our liking (once unlocked, but in the beta they were already available), and which do not change the basic statistics of our avatar: Intellect, Discipline and Strength disappear, and appear Endurance, Mobility and Recovery, which will only affect the clothing of our equipment. But where can we (if we can) modify the speed of recovery of skills? Dilemma.

Also very important classification of weapons, which not only sees new ones appear such as machine guns or grenade launchers, but orders them in a much clearer and more reasoned way: we will have "Kinetic Weapons" (the old primaries, without elemental damage), "Energy Weapons" (of the same categories as kinetic , but which have elemental damage and consequently different ammunition), and "Destructive Weapons" (include the old secondary and the old heavy, have elemental damage and use purple ammo). Last but not least, we point out the inclusion of the third special ability, linked to the class you have chosen, called precisely "Class Skills". This, in addition to the special melee shot and grenades, will be activated by pressing the circle button (in the case of the PS4), and the type of pressure required will also change from class to class.

With me…

The assault that we have been made to taste, Inverted Spiral, it is very similar to the old glories in terms of structure, but which left me particularly happy on the level of the final boss: this in fact will have to be defeated in several phases, and consequently the “unique” and sometimes mammoth arenas where to take on battle are no longer there. To benefit mainly is the dynamism of the action, as well as a good natural dose of primordial survival instinct that will undoubtedly awaken, in addition to the classic "crafty tactical actions" that will sooner or later be studied. On this occasion we were able to test Destiny 2's behavior in co-op and in the presence of other players, with a result that calls neither infamy nor praise. What left us a little bitter in the mouth we find instead in the new social area, the Refuge. Welcoming enough and with a multitude of actions to be taken to pass the time (climbing, crossing, and even soccer!), But which did not even make us smell the scent of a salesman, or a simple NPC. On this occasion, however, we were able to smile at the novelty that Bungie has finally added, as per the announcement: the possibility of choosing and undertake an activity without having to first ascend into orbit. By adding them together, you will realize the HOURS you will save.

... or against me!

Closing the circle, let's talk about the crucible. The great revolution, to begin with, lies in the choice to train 4-member teams compared to 6 seen in the past. This choice made many argue, and made others cry for a miracle. Before judging though, we need to find out what the purpose of Destiny 2's competitive online multiplayer will be, and figure out if that's actually the right choice. The "Control”Is decidedly varied, with the start that gives each team a conquered zone, and with the score attributed in a much more simplistic way. The biggest novelty is the "Detonation“, Defined by Bungie itself as competitive, which will see us activate and defuse charges depending on the round in progress, while trying to exterminate the enemies. For the first time we are faced with a mode in which the victory conditions are more than one and not just the extermination of the enemy team. An all-round challenge. The problems encountered online are varied and often result in “shoot, hit, but don't hurt”. Definitely frustrating. Other times, however, you enter the game with a completely empty map, with the consequent appearance of allies and opponents after about ten seconds.

Destiny 2 PreviewConclusion

In conclusion we can say that the menu is really rich, but for now the chef has not done his best to serve the best dishes. In terms of plot and narrative Destiny 2 presents itself as everything we have always wanted, engaging and with something to tell, but above all that you tell it, also through the other performers. The flaws on a technical level were heavy mainly on the network level, but being a Beta it is exactly what was expected. That the discovery of all these errors is good? We can't say it, but certainly if you know the problems to be solved right away, we are already halfway there.

One thing is certain: Bungie has in many ways learned from its past mistakes, and has re-proposed content in a much better way, reshaping a gameplay and a concept that so far have worked very well, but jammed here and there. Hoping the team will actively pursue technical improvements, we can only expect great things when the full title hits shelves around the world. Stay tuned for the review, remembering that the title will be available starting September 6 on consoles and October 24 on PC!
