Cursed - Review of the new Netflix TV series

Katherine Langford retires the role of Hanna Baker Series Thirteen to enter those of Nimue, a girl with a human appearance but who has very little human, ready to guide us in this new adventure with a name that is anything but relaxing: Cursed is the new series proposed by Netflix, a sometimes contrasting production that takes us back in time, with witches and magic that will be on the agenda, without neglecting enemies and friends. Let's see if this reinterpretation of the legend of King Arthur has brought with it a breath of freshness or not in this story written and rewritten hundreds of times now.

Damn!

Nimue is a girl like many others, who lives her life as a teenager in a village in the forest inhabited by a people strongly linked to magic. However, a Church-led inquisition threatens the survival of the people of Nimue, which will find itself in spite of itself embroiled in a mission not just. The girl's past, in itself troubled, will lead us to discover her deep connection with nature, magical powers that the budding witch does not yet fully control but that only reveal themselves in moments of tension and danger.

Cursed - Review of the new Netflix TV seriesWe cannot reveal too much about the plot, since every element we are going to provide you would risk turning out to be a spoiler. We can tell you that Nimue she will have to go on a journey in search of Merlin the Wizard, a figure who generates awe just by naming her. Interpreted by Gustaf Caspar Orm Skarsgård which is not new to medieval series, we certainly remember him for the recent success of Vikings.

One legend, a thousand stories

Over time, there are many times we have found ourselves in front of the legend of King Arthur: films, books and sagas of all kinds have revisited this story with more or less imaginative attempts. Cursed is no exception, trying to go and tell an episode prior to the events that we know well: failure was just around the corner. Although the intentions were the best, the series seems a jumble of things already seen, experienced in the course of other series such as The Witcher, to take a recent example. Also rejected Katherine Jade Langford, who can not give anything on the screen: the actress seems mono-expressive in every situation, subject to a situation from which neither she nor her character seem to want to get out.

Cursed - Review of the new Netflix TV seriesThe role of the inquisitor Father Carden is entrusted to Peter Mullan who makes no mistake, but unfortunately a single good actor is not enough to revive a series that is leaking from all sides. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, the work is neither meat nor fish: at times we are faced with teen-series episodes, with amorous and honeyed approaches, then followed by splatter and creepy scenes beyond belief, all immediately side by side. to situations with a distinctly fantasy flavor. In general, it seems that the authors did not have very clear ideas on where to take the series, which at times tries to entertain the viewer with interesting ideas but which fail to give weight to the events narrated. Cursed is cursed… yes, but the series.
