Chuchel, the review

Chuchel is the name of the funny creature protagonist of the adventure of the same name by Amanita Design, the team that created jewels such as Machinarium e Botanicula. Originally published on PC last March and now also landed on devices iOS e Android, the title tells the story of a black, hairy monster, with incredibly elastic arms and legs, a huge mouth and a hat made from an acorn, from which it never separates. At the beginning of the game we find him intent on sleeping in his little house, surrounded by objects and unlikely pets (an elephant, two birds and a kind of alcoholic toad), without apparently anything to wake him from his sleep.

Chuchel, the review

It is in these situations that the peculiar approach developed by the authors emerges in all its surprising simplicity, asking us to touch anything to trigger interactions that could solve the problem. puzzle on duty and take us to the next riddle, in a sequence of situations that gradually become more complex and multifaceted, keeping us company for a couple of abundant hours and telling, in their own way, a history which is certainly worth living. A small example: to wake up the protagonist it is necessary for the toad to overturn its bottle on a bird, which by drinking it will swell out of proportion until it falls from its own twig and lands in Chuchel's mouth. Now standing, well rested, the character will try to retrieve a delicious cherry in his "bed", but a huge black hand will take it away, grabbing him too and dragging him into this surprising, suggestive adventure.

A crazy cartoon

The type of gameplay proposed by Chuchel in fact refers to the tradition of "point and click" adventures, replacing in the case of the mobile version the pointer with our own fingers and putting on the table the sequence of trials and errors necessary to identify the interaction we need and the moment in which it must be carried out in order to carry on the puzzle. From this point of view, the variety of situations is incredible: we go from moments like the one described at the beginning to decidedly more intricate phases, with interludes a la Flappy Bird and even homages to classics such as Pac-Man e Tetris to act as the glue between one enigma and another. However, it is above all the technical and artistic sector of the title of Amanita Design that strikes right from the start.

Chuchel, the review

What unfolds before our eyes is in fact a real one Cartoon with an original and mature style, characterized by an excellent design for its many and incredible characters, from an excellent use of colors and an abundance of animations that in no moment leave any doubt about the commitment made by the development team. Every detail has been meticulously taken care of, every valid input corresponds to a reaction and there have been many moments in which we found ourselves smiling like Boeotians in front of the expressions of one of the creatures involved in the numerous puzzles that enrich the Chuchel campaign. The action is also accompanied by a valuable soundtrack, which manages to enhance the scenes while the protagonists continue to emit strange verses that, however, after some time, we will tend to interpret as legitimate forms of expression.

Chuchel is a delightful adventure, an interactive cartoon full of absurd characters, crazy situations, surprising variations on the theme and a great underlying inspiration, which also moves the peculiar adventure mechanics of this new production by Amanita Design. Sure, the experience can stumble at a little cloying moment when you get stuck in front of a less clear-cut puzzle than usual, but when the action flows there is very little to complain about and you can't help but smile in front of the many ideas of the authors. If you are looking for a different game than usual, you have found it.
