CD Projekt - holding company at the head of the software house CD Project Red and the digital distribution platform GOG - officially overtook Ubisoft as the highest-rated video game company within Europe. Yes, the company that has so far has only made 8 games (including the upcoming one cyberpunk 2077) has reached an estimated value of 8 billion euros, thus surpassing, albeit slightly, the giant Ubisoft, active in the sector since 1983. The story of CD Projekt, also told in an interesting documentary, is quite particular. Founded in Warsaw in 1994 by Marcin Iwiński e Michał Kiciński, the company began operating in the sector by translating the famous RPG Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II into Polish. From that small success it turns into a publisher, particularly dedicated to the Fantasy RPG genre. The turning point, however, came in the early 2000s, when the development house CD Projekt Red was founded and the rights to a very famous fantasy saga in Poland, written by Andrzej Sapkowski, were acquired: it was the birth of the phenomenon. The Witcher. From then on the story is known and we cannot imagine when the exponential growth of the company will start to stabilize.
Of course, going back to the clash between mega-sales, we cannot guarantee that the overtaking against Ubisoft will last long. The French company, in fact, has planned the imminent release of 5 high-budget games, we are talking about: Watch Dogs: Legion, Gods & Monsters, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Quarantine, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and one last title yet. unknown. There is a strong expectation for these titles, the success of which will clash with that of Cyberpunk 2077, the new IP of the Polish house, finally arriving on September 17.
Finally, it should be noted that CD Projekt is the most valuable company within Poland, having overtaken PKO Bank Polski, the largest Polish bank, in full crisis due to COVID-19. This often overlooked aspect speaks volumes about the positive impact the gaming industry has on the global economy.
