Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Review, the king of shooters is back

The Call of Duty brand in recent years has not fared too well: due to a distortion of the dynamics (mainly due to an identity crisis of both the brand and the fans), the franchise had begun to travel uninteresting shores, with the latest chapters of the brand not quite successful. Over time, thanks above all to Call of Duty WW2, an ascending parable in terms of quality has begun, which, after passing the Black Ops 4 test, now finds its fulfillment in this reboot, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

A not too nostalgic reboot

One of the Call of Duty that most has remained imprinted in the mind of the players continues to be the fourth chapter, Modern Warfare. Those characters, those events very close to reality (although it should be emphasized that all the chapters of MW, including the reboot, tell fictional stories, fictional characters and fictional countries, but inspired by real events) and those dynamics far from the classic shooter have caused the game to dig deep into the hearts of fans, coming to be in demand. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is therefore a reboot that borrows what has been loved most in the previous chapters of the IP. This is also evident only thanks to the return of Captain Price, who together with many other characters will compose this war scenario divided into 14 missions. Although we are talking about a restart of the brand, the characters are always the same: simply translated into historical terms (about 10 years), the character and appearance remain faithful to the original. To all this is added a decidedly maniacal care of the plot, with script and photography worthy of a Hollywood film, and a motion capture capable of giving life to every single character.

In the game we will control, in addition to Captain Price, also the CIA agent Alex, the rebel Farah and the soldier Kyle: each of them, given the experience and the different combat mode, will have different animations for each single action. Finally, there will be heart-pounding moments, missions that you will replay with great pleasure and many extremely exciting action phases. The maps, which are very different from each other, will also require different approaches, making the game very varied in the aforementioned phases, without ever boring. Technically, to a stellar cast is also added a maniacal care of the environments, undermined by tiny problems of calibration of the general level of detail.

On the field

Of course, there is no Call of Duty without multiplayer, which here reigns supreme with at least two thirds of the game: although the campaign is very interesting, after those 8 hours in-game you will surely end up with a dash on the battlefields of the online universe of the game. title, more heterogeneous than ever. Yup, because this Call of Duty: Modern Warfare allows cross play: this time, in the Social section, you will be able to select both your console friends and those you have added manually who play on other platforms. Finally, all this is joined by the possibility, as always, of being able to play multiplayer even with two people at the same time locally, a feature that never tires.

Speaking of the simple PVP, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare presents the most important modes: you go from the Deathmatch to the Team to the Domain (playable in 6vs6 and 10vs10), and then you will also find Cyber Attack, Search and Destroy, Headquarters and Kill Confirmed. There are also night maps that will require the use of the viewer, the Earth War with vehicles and the 2vs2 mode called Clash (with random classes). Finally, there is also the free-for-all mode, and the possibility of playing most of the modes in the Veteran category (more damaging shots, reduced interface, etc.).

The game maps are very diversified, interesting and vertical: forget, however, the famous COD jumps, because here all you have to do will do it with good old elbow grease. The possibility of closing the doors has been added, as well as placing the weapon on a shelf or corner, so as to be able to lean out and have greater stability. As for the speech most hated by fans, something to avoid a huge mass of campers was done: Snipers, while aiming, will reflect in the light showing you a glare coming from the viewfinder. It will be up to you to move in time, of course.

As for the classes, you can customize them almost immediately by relying on a primary weapon, a secondary, three skills and two items. Of course then, by selecting certain skills, you can change this predisposition, getting closer and closer to your favorite class. Also interesting is the possibility of taking the aesthetics of some soldiers, unlockable following achievements. Achievements are also available for challenges as well: these, selectable one at a time, will make you unlock items to customize your tag and special weapons, which you can then equip.

The other side of the multiplayer coin are certainly the coop missions: they, real special operations, will allow you to play in interesting PVE modes: if survival will catapult you into resistance tests, the Special Operations instead will be real missions resulting from the main plot, which will require tactics and strategy in a team of 4 players. Classes and everything else will be taken from PVP mode, although you will have to be careful as once all four players are dead, the mission will fail.

A deep shooter

Going into the details of the multiplayer we cannot fail to mention the weapons: although in every Call of Duty it was possible to customize them, this time the Infinity Ward team gave their best. By modifying the equipment, in fact, you can modify the various guns that you will unlock: by using them and making them level up, you can change their muzzle, barrel, sight, stock and so on, for a maximum of 5 customizations. In addition to varying the values of the weapon, they will also change its use, giving you greater customization depth. To add even more depth, there will be the Kill Streak (you can have 3 and they will give you bonuses and special attacks depending on how many people you kill in a row) and the Field Booster, a bonus skill that you can activate as the time. To conclude the features related to the equipment there are the watches, which will give some information during the game, and the armory, to be able to create the weapons unlocked through objectives.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Review, the king of shooters is back

Putting aside every single Call of Duty: Modern Warfare feature for a moment, the game stands out precisely because it has been packaged with care, diligence and above all for the players. Every single piece of information and every detail proved to be wanted to make the production suitable for the community, something that in the other chapters was a bit lost. The experience offered in the game does not suggest a simple DLC or a variation of the previous iteration, but shows how even the technical sector has undergone a level up, demonstrable especially in the single-player mode. The test of Infinity Ward convinced us a lot, and we are sure that the arrival of the new multiplayer modes (at least 7) and the inclusion of other contents will bring this chapter of the series higher and higher, not just a restart for the stories of the modern guerrilla, but also of the same brand that finally breathes new air.
