Brawlhalla, the review

It is curious to think about the fact that ours review by Brawlhalla it only comes now that the game has made its debut on devices iOS e Android, in practice, the latest platforms that were missing from the now famous brawler created by Blue Mammoth Games, which can count on something like 40 million players around the world.

The title was in fact originally published in 2017 on PC and PS4, and then landed on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch always maintaining its setting. free-to-play original, although something behind the scenes definitely changed when the development team was bought by Ubisoft.

In reality, the acquisition of the studio by the French house did a great deal of good to the project, which instead of losing spontaneity or focusing more convinced on microtransactions saw the organization of a series of more or less important collaborations and created a lively and passionate eSport scene.

Gameplay

If you know the series of Super Smash Bros., it will take you very little to become familiar with the gameplay by Brawlhalla. In fact, we are talking about a product clearly inspired by the Nintendo franchise, which is basically based on the exact same formula, mixing fighting-game-style action and platforms to give life to frenetic and spectacular fights, in which points are scored when you manage to send the opponent off the screen.

An important difference is represented by weapons and a very particular approach to hitbox. The first ones are projected at regular intervals within the scenario, it is possible to collect them and perform different combinations of attacks depending on the button and the direction, as well as other aspects related to the controls. The latter, on the other hand, do not wrap the appendages of the characters in their entirety, but only precise points, which must be learned and memorized to avoid hitting empty.

Brawlhalla, the review

Thanks to these peculiarities, Brawlhalla turns out to be a surprisingly technical game right from the start, able to involve us in fights whose outcome hangs in the balance from start to finish, given the approach to vital energy and ring out: the hits made push the opponent further and further away, until it is no longer possible for him to regain the first available platform with a double jump and uppercut.

Even the numerous scenery thus become part of the gameplay: some are static, others change their connotation dynamically during the match, literally removing the ground from under our feet while we try to combine the need to inflict damage on our enemies and not fall into the void: a an eventuality that in the opening matches appears far from remote.

Structure

Speaking of competition, Brawlhalla does not include a single player campaign and is therefore completely devoted to mode PvP, starting from a classic all-against-all for four participants to then move on to one-on-one or couple duels and finally arrive at extra modes with special modifiers and customized rooms, for a greater number of users: from six to eight.

Also enriched on mobile from cross-play, namely the possibility of challenging users who play on other platforms (strictly using a controller Bluetooth instead of touch controls, although discreetly implemented), the title of Blue Mammoth Games does not really miss anything and is presented on the App Store and Google Play Store in its best form, the most updated and refined ever.

Characters

As mentioned above, weapons greatly influence our approach to the game in Brawlhalla, but equally the characters they can substantially change the experience, being characterized by different values regarding the effectiveness of the quick and heavy attack, resistance and speed.

Il roster it currently has over fifty fighters, most of which can be unlocked by playing and collecting the necessary amount of gold, or by purchasing a package of about 20 euros to get them all immediately. However, the weekly rotation involves eight warriors and provides a fairly precise idea of the variety and inspirations that the development team has put in place, sometimes reproducing in an all too obvious way figures belonging to the imaginary of anime, cinema and comics.

Technical realization

If from the point of view of the mechanics, the variety of the roster and the available modes, Brawlhalla cannot blame itself for anything, arriving as mentioned at the appointment with mobile devices thanks to a long process of improvement and refinement, from the point of view of technical realization the title by Blue Mammoth Games does not scream a miracle and on the contrary it often leaves a little dumbfounded.

The drawing style of the characters recalls that of flash games, and the shots from a great distance do not help to enhance the aesthetics of the fighters, in many cases rather derivative and not very original. The animations are functional to the action but even there it would be necessary to work, while the scenarios generally appear bare and dull.

Brawlhalla arrives on mobile at the end of an exciting journey, which has allowed the Blue Mammoth Games brawler to conquer millions of players, be the protagonist of important eSports events and yet never betray the original free-to-play formula, which limits microtransactions to cosmetic elements (numerous!) to avoid the pay to win phenomenon. The gameplay is surprisingly technical and is played discreetly even with touch controls, although connecting a Bluetooth controller is a must to make the most of the characters and ring some victories in the many modes available.

PRO

  • Technical and non-trivial gameplay
  • Fast and solid matchmaking
  • Many characters, many scenarios ...
AGAINST
  • ... which, however, had to be taken care of more
  • The graphic style is not crazy
  • Several unoriginal elements
