Birds of Prey, the review

Writing the Birds of Prey review we realized that the unfortunate Suicide Squad viewers can rejoice: we have one more reason not to be ashamed of having given those two hours of our lives in 2016. David Ayer's film, which on paper had the potential to become a cult like that, four years later it is more and more an experiment gone wrong: the super villain team of DC comics has in fact failed in many respects, starting with the choice of Will Smith - who we love, mind you - as the leader of a team of ugly, dirty and bad characters.

The American star has been refusing to play the antagonist all his life and has deceived us with his Deadshot, which ends up becoming the usual swashbuckling hero that Smith has accustomed us to. Let's not talk about Cara Delevigne's Enchantress: the former model is improving, as shown by her performance in the Carnival Row series, but then her face was even more used to the cameras of photo shoots than to those of the cinema. Finally, we arrive at Jared Leto's Joker: it is said that his interpretation has been distorted and mutilated by at least 15-20 minutes lost in the editing phase, but, from what is left, this tattooed version of the clown prince of crime is one of those to forget. All the more so now, after Todd Phillips' operation with Joker, a film that showed us that authorship and cinecomics can go hand in hand and win an avalanche of prizes, with Joaquin Phoenix preparing to make history and obtain, after an endless series of statuettes, even the Oscar winner.

Birds of Prey, the review

After this painful walk along the boulevard of memories, we can say with certainty: only one thing of Suicide Squad is saved, the magnificent Harley Quinn di Margot Robbie. Arrived as a supernova to break through the screens of the whole world thanks to The Wolf of Wall Street by Martin Scorsese (although the most attentive had already noticed her in the role of the unbearable cousin Charlotte in Richard Curtis' A Question of Time), thanks to the DC character the australian actress has become an icon: there are countless girls who continue to dress and make up like her at comic fairs. It's time to Harleen quinzel arrives at the cinema with a film of its own, Birds of Prey (and the phantasmagoric rebirth of Harley Quinn), in Spanish cinemas from February 6, will only increase.

Harley Quinn Picture Show

Aside from the hot pants of Suicide Squad, in which she was the first lady of crime in Gotham City due to her relationship with Mr. J, Harley Quinn completely changes her skin and clothes in Birds of Prey, which opens with her break with the Joker (deliberately erased from memory, evoked only through stories and drawings). Desperate, between an explosion and crying on the couch eating junk like any Bridget Jones, Harley realizes she is completely alone. The respect he had he had not earned, but had reflected it, due to the fear that his puddin is able to arouse. Penniless, without friends and allies, as Harley Quinn tries to console herself with the perfect egg and bacon sandwich, which soon becomes a metaphor for her life, she becomes involved in an intricate game of survival, whose strings are pulled by Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), a criminal as elegant as he is mad, obsessed with physical mutilation and intolerant of women, especially Miss Quinn.

During her escape to safety, Harley clashes with several other women, including policewoman Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Cassandra Cain barks (Ella Jay Basco), singer Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and the mysterious Huntress (Mary elizabeth winstead). They all share a huge diamond, which belongs, needless to say, to Roman.

Margot Robbie World Heritage Site

It would have been easy to go down a beaten path, but Margot Robbie, who, in addition to being enormously talented and disarmingly beautiful, is also one of the actresses and producers (after I, Tonya, who earned her her first Oscar nomination, with her LuckyChap Entertainment she produced in Birds of Prey also starts and will work on Greta Gerwig's Barbie, of which she will also be the protagonist) smarter in the film industry, has chosen to revolutionize the character.

Birds of Prey, the review

Leaving the sexy side in the background, this Harley Quinn does not make sensuality its central aspect, but becomes a colorful comic mask, a real crazy splinter, adorable and disturbing in its madness. At the beginning the embodiment of the stereotype of the stupid blonde, Harley slowly begins to reflect on herself: in another life she was a brilliant psychiatrist, she graduated, she has a certain culture, so how did she become the doormat of the scum of Gotham? The answer is only one: she hears voices, she is completely out of control and, she says it herself, she is a horrible person.

Birds of Prey, the review

Long last! Unlike Will Smith, the actress isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, look mean and mean: her Harley Quinn is a kaleidoscope of contradictions and for that reason - although she does things out of the ordinary like eating candy from a hyena's mouth ( who affectionately calls Bruce, like a Mr. Wayne) and breaking into a police station armed with a shotgun with color-shooting bullets - she is extremely human.

Birds of Prey, the review

It goes without saying that in the role Margot Robbie is absolutely amazing: it is now impossible to imagine another performer in this role. Harley Quinn's skin, whitened by chemicals, is one with hers. It is wonderful to see her struggling with an endless series of facial expressions (many more than her clothing changes), not to mention her fighting scenes: this Harley hits hard and hard. Chad Stahelski, director of John Wick, worked on the action scenes and the great thing is that the protagonist gives so many, but receives just as many: it is her madness and desperation that allow her to take the blows and continue to give them. Perhaps only in Atomica Bionda had we seen (anti) heroines protagonists of such successful fights.

Everything else is not boring

You might think that Birds of Prey is betting everything on its protagonist, but it is not so: as only the very great can do, Robbie does not carve out the role of absolute prima donna, but surrounds himself with other talented performers, above all Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who also has an amazing voice. Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina, who plays Roman's right-hand man, Victor Zsasz, are two unusual antagonists: crazy too, linked by a relationship of addiction and attraction perhaps never seen on the big screen before in a cinecomic.

Birds of Prey, the review

There is to coordinate everyone Cathy yan, here in his second feature film, which, don't mind Martin Scorsese, has set up a real funfair: Birds of Prey is a gentleman pop-corn movie, funny, exaggerated, colorful (note of credit to the photograph by Matthew Libatique). And, as a finishing touch, in addition to Erin Benach's gorgeous costumes, she can also count on one colonna sonora that gives the charge: curated by Daniel Pemberton (who also worked on the beautiful Spider-Man - A new universe), includes songs like It's a Man's Man's Man's World and Barracuda.

A great show then, worthy of the great "fucking Harley Quinn" by Margot Robbie. This Harley is poison whipped cream. We want more.

At the end of the review, Birds of Prey (and Harley Quinn's phantasmagoric rebirth) is a fun and colorful popcorn movie, in which Cathy Yan manages to coordinate John Wick-esque fight scenes and musical moments well. With an excellent cast, splendid costumes, photography and soundtrack, the film is the stage for Margot Robbie and her overflowing Harley Quinn: full of charisma and surprising facial expression, the actress is now one with the character , which he has transformed into a real icon.
